Looking Around with Lee

Ah, it started back in mid-November, Thanksgiving was on the horizon! Are we enthusiastic dog show aficionados looking forward to Turkey Day…of course not! It’s time to get to Ocala for two weekends of dog shows at that wonderful facility in the middle of horse country. There were many supported entries, multiple Sighthound specialties, and majors in many breeds to be had!
Florida shows can be warm and inviting in November, OR not! These shows were NOT. It was cold and on some days damp and rainy, but did that deter the resolute dog family? Of course not! We all did our share of showing, winning and losing and at the end of the Ocala shows, and in honor of the upcoming holiday, we all wished each other Happy Thanksgiving! And being so late in the month, this only added to the crunch time on how to balance “Canines and Christmas”!
Exhibitors and handlers departed for parts unknown for more shows and in the case of some breeds, a specialty on Thanksgiving!
Two weeks before Christmas we attend the big Christmastime extravaganza in Orlando–the Royal Canin/AKC National Championship show, and the mid-week All Breed, Group and Specialty shows preceding it! This year these shows exceeded all other year’s entries and became the largest shows in the USA for 2019. Again, the holidays, Christmas, & Hanukkah were put on hold for our stalwart dog show population! All the surrounding hotels were in full holiday mode with Christmas trees shooting skyward, festive colors splashing on most of their 20+ stories of rooms, and there were some holiday decorations to be seen in the grooming area as well as the vendors spaces, but Santa was not on the minds of most exhibitors, there for the rewards of winning at this most important show! However, Santa did bring many gifts for those great dogs that were able to wrap up a “Top Dog” placement as the last shows of the year came to an end.
Finally, after the shows were over there were many wishes for a Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays to be shared as all departed for home and, hopefully, a few days to enjoy the season.
