There are two Corgis from Wales, one with a tail (Cardigan) and one without (Pembroke). But there are more differences beyond the tail. They were developed in different parts and geographies in Wales. The Cardigan is a much older breed whose forebearers came from German Teckel dogs brought by the Celts from Europe, sharing the same ancestors as the Dachshund. The Pembroke came with the Vikings much later and are related to Spitz breeds.
Cardigans are a bit larger and heavier than Pembrokes and have more acceptable coat colors. Some claim that the Cardigans are also somewhat less high-energy.
We found twenty-three Cardigan Welsh Corgi breeder-judges to invite to take a survey on their breed’s priorities. Eighteen people responded that they would participate. In the end, eleven returned surveys.
On average, these Cardigan breeder-judges have more than twenty-eight years experience in their breed and have been judging it for over twelve years. More than half have judged their national specialty, and all have judged Cardigan specialties.

The survey included a list of characteristics from the standard for the breeder-judges to rank from most important to least important. Next is the list in sequence by the average ranks, with 1 being the most important.
