When the Stars Came Out to Dog Shows!
Ah-h-h-h . . . the “good ol’ days” of dog shows past!
- Thank you Bernadette Cox for the Memories!
Back in the 1960′s and 1970′s . . . there was great interest in purebred dogs and dog shows in Los Angeles. I routinely contacted the television KTLA weather girl, Kelly Lange, who, at the completion of her weather reports, (on the weekends,) would spotlight something fun to do in LA. So, before every ANTELOPE VALLEY K.C. show . . . Kelly would give us a free plug on TV. “Want to see hundreds of beautiful dogs? Go to the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds in Lancaster for their annual show this Sunday.” We always had thousands of spectators who would drive up. Our December show, the last one West of the Mississippi, had large entries (3500 +) with dogs trying to get points before the year’s end.
And, the LOS ANGELES TIMES had a special section in their weekend magazine called . . . CHAMPION DOG DIRECTORY. You had to have at least one champion in your kennel, and your name and phone number were listed by breed. That is how Kathleen Kennedy & Steven Spielberg (AMBLIN ENTERTAINMENT) reserved a puppy from me. Through this Directory, I also met the CEO of the famous talent group, the WILLIAM MORRIS AGENCY . . .Sid & Marty Kroft (creators of the children’s TV show, H.R. PUFFINSTUFF) . . . and the President of the SCREEN ACTORS GUILD. What a fun time that was . . . meeting these celebrities.
