Great Non-Sporting Dogs From The Past

There were so many great Non-Sporting dogs shown in the 1940s and ’50s that have been forgotten. Here are five outstanding Non-Sporting Dogs from that era you should know about. Look for more Great Non-Sporting Dogs of the Past in the coming days!
Mrs. Sherman R. Hoyt, P.C.A. President in 1934 and 1935, with her Standard Poodle, Ch. Blakeen Luzon. This pair was Best of Breed at P.C.A. in conjunction with Westminster where she went on to take Non-Sporting Group First there in 1945.
This is the Bulldog, Ch. Michael Pendergast, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Carlos Henriquez during the early 1940s. He is pictured receiving one of his numerous Non-Sporting Group wins from judge Anna Katherine Nicholas in 1947. He was handled by George Hargreaves.
A trailblazer among Miniature Poodles, the imported Ch. Snow Boy of Fircot is pictured winning at the Interstate Poodle Club in 1948 under judge Anna Katherine Nicholas. A widely admired and highly successful little dog, “Boysie” came here in 1945. He won the 1949 Quaker Oats Award as the leading Non-Sporting Dog for that year. His overall lifetime show record in the U.S. stood at 60 times Best of Variety, 38 Non-Sporting Groups, 17 Best in Shows, and 2 Best In Specialty Shows. This dog was a strong force behind successful White Miniatures for a long time.
Ch. Roadcoach Roadster is pictured winning Best of Breed at Westminster Kennel Club in 1955, Owner-Handled by his Breeder Mary Barrett. Roadster was born in 1954 by Ch. Boot Black from Dalmatia out of Ch. Roadcoach Kittereen. His 17 All-Breed Best In Shows included the Morris and Essex Kennel Club in 1956. He was the sire of champions including Tioga Sportscar, Roadcoach Random, and Kiss and Tell From Dalmatia. Roadster was sold to Mrs. S.K. Allman, Jr., Doylestown, PA, for whom, under Charley Meyers’ handling, he had many outstanding wins.
Seafren Kennels of Mr. and Mrs. Saunders L. Meade owned this highly successful imported Miniature Poodle of the mid-1950s. Ch. Fircot L’Ballerine of Seafren was handled throughout his exciting Best In Show and Group Winning career by Mrs. Ruth Burnette Sayers.
