Westminster 2014 – Some Things Better, Some Not So Good
By Amy Fernandez
After day one, Westminster’s second year at the Piers is working better in some ways. But it’s far from perfect yet.
This year’s weather posed new challenges and waterfront locations like the Piers redefine the concept of frigid. Thankfully, the shuttle buses run more frequently, which prevented long lines at corner bus stops. However, signage remains inadequate. Exhibitors know where shuttle stops are located, but hordes of clueless spectators wandered about searching for them.
Even so, they eventually arrived. Overall, spectator turnout is noticeably better. It was packed by midmorning, much to the delight of vendors. Vendor participation is also up this year, with several newcomers spicing up the old favorites. Among them, AKC’s concession features several fabulous pieces from their legendary art collection. But the vendor area is quite spacious. There is no comparison to the frenzied mobs that became a hallmark of benching at MSG.
But some things never change. Interminable lines for restrooms are matched by endless queues at food concessions. The club provided far more seating, but they could easily double that because virtually everyone is footsore after a few hours trekking through this enormous venue. Once again, many breeds were not benched and exhibited on the same pier. You don’t face impenetrable crowds trying to get back and forth, but it’s a lengthy, complicated walk, with long waits for elevators and a brisk stroll through an outdoor walkway.
The spacious rings are definitely an improvement. The club has increased ringside seating, supplemented with rows of benching at some rings. But it is far from adequate to accommodate crowds at some rings. The 60 inch screens enhanced viewing, but twice as many, twice that size are needed to provide everyone with a clear view of the action.
Compared to MSG, benching is paradise. Exhibitors have plenty of space for grooming tables, chairs, and comforts needed for this long day. Rather than rush on a packed train, it has the relaxed, friendly atmosphere that once characterized benched shows. That may be the most vital aspect of Westminster’s new site.
