FEMA Preparedness For Your Canine Companion
226 – September, 2016
BY WILLIAM GIVEN
Just in case you have not heard the news, September is National Preparedness Month! This year marks the 13th annual National Preparedness Month spon- sored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Throughout the month of September there will be activities all across our great nation to promote disaster preparedness. Na- tional, state, county and local public and private organizations will be supporting individual and family emergency preparedness efforts. All Americans are highly encouraged to take some time to actively prepare for human-created crises and natural disasters.
My wife and I committed ourselves to learning more about and becoming as totally prepared as possible in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The philosophy of preparedness fascinated us. It has at times felt like a dizzying preparedness pil- grimage, but it has provided us with a real sense of confidence and surety about our family’s well-being and survivability.
I know being prepared for any of the various man-made emergencies and natural disasters provides security for my family in many different ways. I know just how reassuring it is when any of my accounts receivable come in a few days late, or when the entire family is suffering the effects of an intestinal virus and we are stuck in our own little survival bunker that is the bathroom down the hall. I know, and you know, that proper preparation would be of benefit to every one of us if we suddenly suffered an unexpected illness, significant injury, or unexpected job loss that caused our income to dramatically drop or even disappear. Preparing for emergencies is crucial for all of us in so many ways.
Do Not Forget About Your Canine Companion
If you were to survey a sizeable portion of the canine loving public, the vast majority of those people would certainly tell you that the family dog is not just a dog, but a cherished member of the family. We love our dogs and plan our daily activities around their needs. But when it comes to preparedness, our canine com- panions tend to be put on the back burner. We cannot forget about them! So, how can you prepare for your dog?
