Airline personnel have been wielding big power in the years since 9/11. Passengers are regularly berated, fined, kicked off flights, and worse for perceived infractions ranging from what they are reading to what they are wearing as cabin attendants seek to maintain order on the flight.
United Airlines apologized on Tuesday after a dog died on a flight during which it was stored in a passenger’s overhead compartment. A witness said that a flight attendant had ordered the pet owner to put the dog in the compartment before the plane took off.

First violations would qualify as petty misdemeanors with fines up to $100. Second or subsequent violations would qualify as misdemeanors with 30 hours of community service for an organization that serves individuals with disabilities and fines up to $1,000 and/or up to 90 days’ jail time.
