“DID YOU KNOW… Michael Canalizo is CC’s newest writer!!”

We are proud to welcome Michael to the team! Here’s what you can expect from him in the coming months…

“Let’s get the basics out of the way first. Im Michael Canalizo and I have been involved in the sport of purebred dogs for 60 years now. Ugh..it’s painful just typing that! But for anyone new(er) to the sport, it can be equally as painful when you encounter something for the first time, and that can happen in oh so many ways in our wonderful little world.

Okay…60 years, second generation breeder/owner/handler of many champions, somewhere north of 100 in my main breed: Afghan Hounds. I eventually transitioned into professional handling and settled in as the Kennel Manager of an established breeding program that has now celebrated their 82nd year of continuous breeding. The Afghans of Grandeur have held or broken just about every record in the breed–none more important than being the first Breeder/Owner/Handler to pilot their dog to Best In Show at the Westminster Kennel Club. (1957) I personally have achieved over 300 BIS wins, over one thousand Group wins and handled the two top winning hounds of all time. This naturally had me in attendance of over 100 shows a year as an exhibitor, judge or spectator. There were many eye opening moments along that path.

Being  associated with the principals of Grandeur ( Sunny Shay, Roger Rechler and currently Evelyn and Bill Rechler) I come to you with a lot of experience in breeding, showing and now judging. My tenure working for the American Kennel Club also adds some of my penchant for rules and regulations to be understood, applied and respected.

My intentions are to bring to this space many of the interesting, intriguing, intricate, and sometimes unnecessarily intimidating aspects of the sport. You’re going learn a lot on how to prepare, handle and avoid some of those unexpected moments of anxiety, accomplishment and sometimes avoidance of anger.

I welcome suggestions and sharing of one’s experiences that might need a viewpoint that could be useful to others.
