This was way before air travel with dogs was prevalent. Air travel with dogs was done on old, two engine prop planes. For us, it was the old Flying Tiger Line that we went on. It was a nineteen-hour trip from Burbank, California, to Newark, through Salt Lake City and Detroit. The dogs, tack, handlers, and helpers were weighed in as freight.

I’m sure most of you are aware of the pilot program that AKC has announced which will allow mixed-breed dogs to compete in Junior Showmanship. AKC’s goal, as I understand it, is to enable as many juniors as possible to participate in our great sport. Many fanciers have asked if the ownership requirement might also be addressed. Currently, the junior showmanship guidelines require that the dog being exhibited also be owned by the junior. I am in the process of getting clarification regarding how this pilot program will be administered and will share that information with you as soon as it is available.

My heart is filled with hope after taking a look at this past weekend’s slate of shows! There were several shows to choose from, and there were good entries at all of them, along with some nice competition! Our West Coast friends continue to drive many miles to attend shows. Those of you who are fortunate enough to have dog shows closer than a couple thousand miles to their home should be thankful!
