The Dog Show Game at a Crossroads

Now that I have taken Emeritus status from the dog show judges ranks having survived hundreds of shows, twenty three of them overseas, I thought it a good time to survey where we have been and where, perhaps, we are going.

I entered the fray when Ch. Rock Falls Colonel, the English Setter, and Bang Away of Sirrah Crest, the Boxer, were at the top of their form. For many that seems like a long time ago. For me, it seems only yesterday.

Our sport lost one of its greatest icons on Valentine’s Day. Frank Sabella passed away at the age of 91. Frank touched the lives of so many and he was an idol to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His wealth of knowledge, dedicated spirit, and sharp wit will be sorely missed. Rest well, my friend.

The fancy has also been very vocal in showing huge appreciation to those involved in last week’s Ft. Lauderdale shows which were held at the Ocala showgrounds. Many said that they felt safer at those shows than they do at the grocery store! Saturday’s show was cancelled after three groups due to bad weather–including bad storms and tornado warnings–but besides that, the shows came off without a hitch! It takes a village, and we are lucky that this village exists ten times over within our fancy. Way to go, and thank you to all involved!

Getting To Know Us – The Great Judge Mr. Alva Rosenberg

Alva Rosbenberg in September, 1944, at age 52, awarding the Non-Sporting Group at the Interstate Kennel Association to Mrs. Sherman R. Hoyt of the legendary Blakeen Poodles for one of her white Standard stars. Club President, Anna Katherine Nicholas looks on.

The years pass and many changes occur in our world of purebred dogs. Among them the cast of characters of the participants, which is particularly notable where some of our best-loved and most esteemed all breed judges are concerned! Who would have believed, twenty years ago, that the day might come when the once magic name “Alva Rosenberg” might bring forth a puzzled look and the question “who’s that” from the exhibitor or breeder or just casual fancier
