Tompkins Square Park has been a NYC dog zone for longer than anyone remembers. These days, it enjoys extensive official acknowledgement in that regard, as illustrated by the 32nd annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade, which returned this year following a two-year Covid hiatus. The place was packed, with long lines, massive crowds, and plenty of media coverage.

In a landmark study, scientists have developed one of the first DNA tests for a complex disease in dogs, meaning one that arises from the interplay of many genes as well as environment. So far, virtually all DNA tests for disorders have detected one or possibly two gene variables. This DNA test, for canine cruciate ligament rupture in Labrador Retrievers, relies on values at thousands of genetic loci to predict if a dog is likely to develop a ruptured cruciate ligament. Perhaps even more importantly, it could herald in more DNA tests for complex disorders.

Researchers at the University of Glasgow in Scotland were trying to create a robotic dog that could cause people to bond with it. To do so they needed to find out what it is about our dogs that makes us love them. So, they asked dog owners what it was about their dogs they felt was most important in bonding with them.
