The Dog Writers Association of America (DWAA) annual writing competition is open and accepting entries.

Entrants will compete for the coveted Maxwell Medallion in a variety of categories. The medal is named for dog writing legend Maxwell Riddle. In addition, contestants have the chance to win more than $7,000 in cash and prizes from special award category sponsors. All sponsors and categories are listed in the contest section of the DWAA website.

New this year; entries in Regular Categories no longer differentiate between articles that were published online vs. articles published in a print magazine. They will be now judged together! Also new this year are Youth categories, for authors and creators under age 18.  Please review the contest rules for further information. Contestants are encouraged to review the regular and special categories to determine where an entry fits best.

The contest opened September 1, 2024, and closes October 31, 2024. Finalists will be announced via social media at the end of 2024, with winners announced during Westminster Week at an awards banquet on February 8, 2025, at the Hotel New Yorker.

Entries must have been published, posted, or aired between September 1, 2023, and August 31, 2024. For junior writers, publication can mean posting on a school website, literary magazine, or blog. For more information on this year’s contest, visit: https://dogwriters.org/writing-competition/.
