Outside the French doors that open up to the courtyard, an unexpected, heavy, wet snow is falling. The weight of the snow is bending the big branches on the trees, still naked of their leaves. As the wind begins to blow ever harder, the snow flies through the air, landing on the bricks which have been cleared of snow more times today than I care to recount. From my vantage point at the kitchen island, I am watching a robin go in and out of the big sugar maple tree where its nest must be. “Poor robin,” I say silently to myself. “I bet this is no fun for you either.” Even as we change our clocks forward tonight, it is obvious. Spring is not ready to make an appearance.

Unfortunately, Dr. Carmen Battaglia did not make it back to the show to judge on Saturday. He went to the hospital after the show on Friday with chest pain. Dr. Battaglia had a mild heart attack, and two stints were put in him. I am told he will rest for a couple of weeks and then he’ll be back in the ring as well as hosting his popular seminars. Feel better soon, Carmen! We are anxiously awaiting your return.

It all began in 1884 when the American Kennel Club (AKC) was founded. From its beginning the AKC began to harness science and technology for the benefit of producing better purebred dogs. It wasn’t long before the AKC became recognized as a leader in breed knowledge, health and training for all dogs as the advocate for responsible dog ownership and the dog sport. Over these many years certain events brought about changes. One involved a response to breeders who asked for a tool which was later called the Limited Registration (LR). The idea for such a tool was approved by the AKC Board in June of 1988 and referred to the delegate body for consideration. The idea for this tool was first noted when breeders asked AKC to create a tool that would address the registration of pups with disqualifications, serious faults and/or health problems. They needed a way to protect the gene pool of their breed.
