Table Talk – June 2, 2021

What a busy Memorial Day Weekend for the dog fancy! While the weather was fantastic for some, it had a cold, windy, wet start for others! Despite less than desirable conditions at some of the shows, everyone was happy to be out doing what we dog people do!

For the first time in many, many years, I was home for the holiday weekend due to the Mission Circuit having to cancel their traditional Memorial Day circuit at the Fairplex in Southern California.  While this year’s cancellation was due to the site not being open to events in time for the show, the customary dates for Mission will have to change going forward due to the LA County fair rescheduling to the month of May. I am hopeful that the volunteers of this cluster will be able to reschedule the shows for the Labor Day weekend. Stay tuned for more information as it evolves.

I took the opportunity to take my young puppy to the Kalamazoo shows on Sunday for a bit of socialization, and to see my Midwest friends. In addition to the wonderful opportunity to walk my little guy around the show, I was thrilled to actually see real SMILES!!!!!!!! I found it difficult to recognize some folks full-faced, and what a glorious problem to have! As much of the country opens up and COVID restrictions are relaxed, we are able to once again enjoy our sport similar to the way it used to be! While there are some clubs that find it necessary to be more conservative with their COVID protocols, either because of preference or state and local requirements, fanciers can make choices about the shows they attend. There is no reason to put undue stress on club volunteers and officials regarding their requirements for those attending their shows. It is going to be a great summer for shows, my friends, ENJOY every moment!

The Burbank Kennel Club has announced that they are unable to hold their show this summer, but we certainly hope to have that show back on the schedule in Southern California in the summer of 2022.

Plans are underway to bring you Table Talk Live! coverage from the 145th Annual Westminster Kennel Club dog show! I hope to keep those of you unable to attend in the loop throughout Westminster weekend! Please be sure to drop me a line at deb.cooper@caninechronicle.com if you will be attending and have a special interest story that you think the fancy will enjoy! Best of luck to everyone showing!

If you have not had the opportunity to see the Table Talk segment with Gail Bisher regarding this year’s Westminster show, be sure to check it out on caninechronicle.tv. Thanks to all of you who sent in questions for Gail. I hope the segment proves useful and informative as we experience Westminster being held outdoors in the summer for the first time ever!

The American Kennel Club announced this past week that Larry Cornelius will be filling the role of AKC RHP field coordinator vacated by Gina Weiser when she retired. This coordinating role will become part of Larry’s regular duties as an Executive Field Rep. I’m sure Larry will do a great job working with RHP members in the same manner he conducts his other field representative responsibilities.

The American Kennel Club also announced that Jill Bell has been hired to fill the Texas AKC Field Rep spot. Most recently serving as a show superintendent for Onofrio Dog Shows, and a professional handler prior to that, Jill is familiar with the area, and should be able to hit the ground running! Congratulations on your new job, Jill.  Onofrio will have a tough time filling your shoes!

May 29th did not go as planned for Kristyn and David Stout who welcomed Derek Charles Stout into the world. Their baby boy weighed in at 7lb. 4 oz. Derek just couldn’t wait and arrived a month early!!!  Congratulations to David and Kristyn on your new bundle of joy!

Celebrating anniversaries this week are Luke and Rowan Baggenstos, Tracy and Dave Swinson, and Linda and Gary Rowley. I hope that your special day was filled with loved ones and a wonderful celebration!

Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week are: Brittani Cornelius, Jennifer McClintock, Greg Smith, Jody Garcini, Kim Booth, Guy Fisher, Jennifer Hoffmann, Shawn Nichols, Dennis Melear, Janet Lange, Lois Ann Snyder and Karissa Smith-Lewis. Best wishes to each of you. I hope you have a glorious birthday and many more happy, healthy, dog-show filled years to come!

Be safe out there my friends! Best wishes for many big ribbons, majors, and beautiful puppies!  I look forward to seeing you all soon!  Until next time…
