Table Talk

The last circuit of the ‘Texas Death March’ is upon us as the show committee prepares Reliant Hall for the 4-day Houston World Series of Dogs Shows. I wish all my friends much luck at the shows and safe travels to and from them.

Here’s something new. Eukanuba dog food will be hosting the first-ever Performance Games at Eukanuba Hall September 14-17th at the Roberts Centre in Wilmington, Ohio. Among the activities will be the first AKC Scent Trial. They will also hold Dock Diving, Fast Cat, Lure Coursing, Disc competition and Barn Hunt. A barbecue is slated for all exhibitors for Friday evening, and there will be run-offs for each completion. Eukanuba intends to offer prize packs for each event. It seems that the brand is investing in Performance sports, which is a great win for the sport of purebred dogs in general.

I continue to try to keep this column positive and write about the good things that we encounter from week to week. In the recent past, hopping on social media to see what is going on around the country has been somewhat like reading the newspaper or watching the news i.e. depressing. Keeping the sport positive involves good sportsmanship and an effort to be kind and courteous to others. If each of us can focus on doing one kind thing each dog show weekend, and think twice before making an unkind or inappropriate remark, or not congratulating someone for a win, we can help turn our fancy back into the positive, rewarding sport that attracted us all to it in the first place. That win that you did not get is just as important to the individual that DID win! Keep it positive. Let that person enjoy the moment.

We all know about hot summers and this one is no different. It has been hot here in the Midwest as well as most other places in the country. We all need to remember that it only takes a horrible malfunction of some equipment combined with us not checking on our dogs to lead to tragedy. The death of one of our dogs changes our life forever. Vehicles need to be checked time and time again prior to going to shows and owners need to do their homework as well. If you have someone else caring for and presenting your dogs, it is your responsibility as the owner to understand exactly how a handler is going to care for the dogs, what vehicle will be used, how it is maintained, etc.

I was saddened to hear that the Beauceron Tony Carter showed, Legende, lost his life while protecting one of his owners. Legende was protecting Carolyn Mills from a poisonous snake and succumbed to snake bites. Legende died a hero. Our thoughts are with all of the owners and handlers on the loss of Legende.

Saturday, July 29th will be a big day for Bill and Taffe McFadden as they marry off their eldest daughter, Taylor, to Patrick Haggerty. Best wishes to all. Enjoy this momentous occasion!

I was glad to hear that Luiz Abreu is feeling better after spending a couple days in the hospital. He and Tracy Szaras are celebrating their third anniversary. I cannot believe it has been three years!

Celebrating birthdays this week are: Barbara LaVere, Gino Paulopoulos, Carissa DeMilta-Shimpeno, Vicki Holloway and Mike Carlucci.

Be safe my friends, and don’t forget that one kind thing… Be Kind to Your Fellow Competitors!!!

Until next time….
