Table Talk – February 20, 2019
February 20, 2019
I think everyone will agree that flying dogs is getting more and more difficult and, more importantly, increasingly frightening. It was encouraging to hear all of the positive feedback about Alaska Airlines from those who utilized it to transport dogs to the recent Westminster Kennel Club dog show. If you used Alaska Airlines to fly your dogs to Westminster (or any other show/purpose, for that matter), please take the time to reach out to their staff with your positive feedback! Not only did all the exhibitors have a positive experience with the staff, logistics, etc., but everyone agreed that the cost was reasonable.
Gabriel Rangel and “King” made their Broadway debut as part of the post-Westminster media tour. They joined the on-stage cast of Pretty Woman and Kinky Boots to the thrill of the audiences for both. They were a smash hit on the Great White Way!
Canadian handler Will Alexander, who went Best In Show at Westminster Kennel Club in 2015 with “Miss P” the Beagle, announced his retirement from handling after this year’s Westminster. Will had a very successful handling career in both Canada and the States and his presence around the rings will be missed by many. Best wishes on the next chapter of your career, my friend, and I hope to see you soon!
Texas-based handlers Matt and Melissa Mato had their box truck and trailer stolen from the hotel this past weekend while attending the shows in Colorado. All dogs were at the show grounds and are safe. Matt and Melissa are still in Colorado working with police to try to find their rig. A GoFundMe account has been established to assist them with the related costs of this loss.
This year the Great Western Terrier Association (GWTA) will join the Kennel Club of Beverly Hills cluster held at the Pomona Fairgrounds the first weekend of March. The addition of GWTA has resulted in a 400-dog increase in the Beverly Hills entry over two days. Once again this year, group judging at the Beverly Hills show will be taped for television on Saturday and will air on NBC on Easter Sunday at 1 PM Eastern.
Bruce Schwartz took a detour to Israel on his way home from New York this year. The photos are incredible, and I look forward to hearing all about the fabulous trip! Safe travels home, my friend.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Katherine Wurz Smoot whose father was recently diagnosed with lung cancer. Katherine has been by his side for his treatments, which began this week. Hang in there, my friend, we are all thinking about you.
Congratulations to Heidi Hartman on the birth of her first grandson on her birthday! Lincoln James Seible was born 7 pounds 5 ounces and everyone is doing fine. Unfortunately Heidi came home from New York with the “Westminster crud” and has yet to see Lincoln in person. Here is hoping you are better soon and get to cuddle the new bundle of joy.
The Boxer fancy has lost an icon with the passing of Jeff Crowther of Boxerton Boxers fame. Jeff left our world this past week. Our thoughts are with all of Jeff’s friends and family at this most difficult time.
Schipperke fancier and popular ring steward Ed Simanek passed away this week after repeated hospital stays. Our condolences to Ed’s friends and family at this difficult time.
Our thoughts go out to Nancy Liebes who lost her mother Mildren Ault this past week. Nancy, you are in our prayers.
Happy anniversary to Alberto and Terri Berrios who are celebrating 27 years of wedded bliss. May you love birds have many more happy, healthy years together!
For those of you who will be in Louisville this year, please reach out to me if you are interested in helping with our Breed Priority segments of Table Talk Live! I am also always interested in hearing ideas for segments that you think may be interesting or fun for the fancy: shoot me an email at deb.cooper@caninechronicle.com.
Celebrating birthdays this week are: Erin Olsen, Jill Parslow, Allison Sunderman, Blair Aguillard, Susanna Bjornsson, Kate Berry, Anne Reagan, Joey Alarcon, Barry Rose, Jennifer Baggenstos, Rindi Gaudet, Heather Buehner and Sarah Purdin-Golding.
Be safe in your travels, my friends and please continue to be kind to your fellow exhibitors, and club volunteers. When all else fails, turn up the music and dance with your dog!!!! Until next time…
