Table Talk – September 26, 2018

Most of our terrier friends are doing the last minute “touch-ups” on their dogs in preparation for the upcoming Montgomery County Kennel Club show. The largest All-Terrier show in the world has an entry of 1,421 terriers this year, which is down slightly from 2017. The decreased entry could be attributed to the fact that the American Staffordshire Terrier National is not at Montgomery this year. Congratulations to Bergit KabeI for drawing an entry of 135 Scottish Terriers!!!! Have fun, Bergit! I am hoping for good weather for all of my terrier friends this year. Good luck to all, and most importantly, have fun and enjoy the show! This show is still on my bucket list – Maybe next year!

I have heard some frustration regarding paid grooming and power from exhibitors who have attended or attempted to attend shows at the Purina Event Center. Currently, power is only provided for those that pay for their grooming spots. If you do not pre-reserve grooming, you do not have access to power unless you “borrow” it from a friend who did reserve and pay for a grooming spot with power. Purina is not responsible for the paid grooming and parking at the Event Center; they rightfully abdicate this responsibility to the show committees. In my opinion (okay, I may be a little bit biased), the Event Center is one of the best venues for dog shows in the country. I do not believe there is a perfect venue, just like there is no such thing as a perfect dog –it is about the whole package. If grooming with power is critical to you, I urge you to look carefully at the premium list for grooming information and send in your grooming reservations early for shows held at the Purina Event Center!

Reserved, paid grooming has been a topic of discussion for some time. I would love to hear how YOU feel about it. Please email me at deb.cooper@caninechronicle.com and respond to the following questions:

How do you feel about paid, reserved grooming? Do you think that there should be a portion of grooming that is not paid and reserved? Are you willing to pay for reserved grooming and, if so, how much are you willing to pay for a reserved spot? Let’s get a consensus! I look forward to hearing from you!

I hear Great Western Terrier Club has moved their show to the Pomona Fairgrounds the Friday preceding the Beverly Hills Kennel Club show. This should be a terrific change for our West Coast Terrier exhibitors as the Pomona Fairgrounds is an outstanding venue for a dog show. Hopefully, this great addition will improve the all-breed entry for Beverly Hills Kennel Club as well.

I was saddened to hear about the passing of German Shepherd breeder and judge Cappy Pottle. Anyone who knows about Shepherds has heard of Covy Tucker Hills. Cappy was the breeder of the great German Shepherd ‘Manhattan’ who Jim Moses guided to Best in Show at Westminster.

Happy Anniversary to Ashley and Brendon Ryan and Katie and Adam Bernardin. May you guys enjoy many more years of health and happiness!

Congratulations to Katie Martin and Jeremy White on their recent marriage. My goodness, I remember when Katie started in Juniors – Where does the time go?

I was saddened to hear that “Uno” aka Ch. K-Run’s Park Me In First, the Beagle piloted by Aaron Wilkerson to Best in Show at Westminster Kennel Club in 2008, has passed away at the age of 13. “Uno” was loved by all and was truly an ambassador for the sport of purebred dogs and canines in general! My heart goes out to the many people that were a part of Uno’s life. He will be missed.

Judy English Murray checked in to say that she is home recovering nicely from her recent knee replacement surgery and looks forward to being back at shows either judging or showing her Dalmatians. We look forward to having you back soon, Judy!

Celebrating birthdays this week are: Jim Moses, Jay Serion, Mandy Clevenger, Kristina Rock, Erika Lanasa, Monica Bowers, Julie Lynn Mueller, Roberta Lombardi, Tina Turley-Kocab, and Diana Grassfield-Lenz.

Please remember to give a kind shout-out to our show committee volunteers and take the time to help a newbie! Safe travels, my friends – until next time….
