Table Talk – September 18, 2018

SAFE!!! I am pleased to report that, from the reports I have so far, our canine family on the Carolina Coast has reported in safe and sound following Hurricane Florence. Many had to pack up their human, canine and equine family members and temporarily relocate, but most are back home and safe. Our thoughts are with those that have suffered damage resulting from the storm as well as those who are still in the midst of rising floodwaters.

This past weekend at the Lehigh Valley Kennel Club show in Macungie, PA the definition of exhibitors banding together and coming through when a fellow exhibitor needs help rang true once again! Ray Delfing was showing his Great Dane in the NOHS Working Group and had a heart attack. Ray fell to the ground with no pulse, and Kate DeSanto immediately swung into action and was able to revive him. Ray was extremely fortunate that Kate, who is an MSN, RN was there and knew exactly what to do and took charge. Meghan Sheehan and Melody Lasky were also there to lend a hand until the EMTs showed up. Rings were running behind due to weather and, as a result, Ray Delfing was running around the ring when he experienced his heart attack instead of driving home, which could have resulted in a much different outcome for him. Ray has since had surgery and will make a full recovery. Kudos to Kate, Meghan and Melody for jumping in and helping a fellow exhibitor in need!! You folks saved a life!

Our friends Justin and Cheslie Smithey, Kellie Fitzgerald, David Fitzpatrick and Joan Scott are enjoying a few days of R&R at the beautiful Grand Hotel at Mackinac Island in Michigan. Desi Murphy is off to Bogota, Columbia for a judging assignment. Elizabeth Salewsky is vacationing in Cancun and Holley Eldred and Dale Kaplan are celebrating Holley’s birthday on Captiva Island in Florida. I hope you all enjoy your time with friends and family and have a safe journey back home!

I am thrilled to report that Bobby Hutton’s recent health scare turned out to be a misdiagnosis. He will be in Colorado this coming weekend to fulfill his judging assignment!

I heard Betty Ann Stenmark took a fall and broke her foot. Heal quickly my friend and I hope you can make it to Del Valle. The show would not be the same without you!

Congratulations to Lisa Arnett on her recent engagement to Jeremy Carter. All the best for a happy life together my friends!

Sadly, our sport lost two icons this past week. Elaine Mathis recently passed away. Elaine judged the Sporting, Hound, Terrier, Toy and Non-Sporting groups as well as Best In Show. She and her husband, LaMar, bred Cocker Spaniels under the LaMar prefix. Elaine was a member of the American Spaniel Club Hall of Fame.

I am also sad to report that Patsy Wood passed away this past week. A good friend and mentor to all, Patsy was an active member of the Montgomery Kennel Club. She was known for her Sealyham Terriers and Dandie Dinmont Terriers bred under the Penllyn prefix.

Both Elaine and Patsy will be sorely missed. The loss of their knowledge about purebred dogs leaves another hole in our sport. Our thoughts go out to their family and friends and all who knew them.

Congratulations to the Field Spaniel Club of America on their record entry for the 2018 National. With an entry of 200, this represents the largest Field Spaniel National Specialty in history! This year’s National was held at the event center at Purina Farms.

The Montgomery County Kennel Club will be raffling off an Impact® Crate at their upcoming show. They will have a table set up where raffle tickets will be available.

Take the Lead will be holding a 25th anniversary party at the Del Valle shows on Saturday, October 20th. Tickets can be purchased on the Take The Lead Website for $65 each or $455 for a table of 8. Stay tuned for more information regarding this fun-filled event for a great cause!

Happy Birthday wishes to Gene Blake who celebrated his 82nd birthday!

I heard Moe Miyagawa celebrated his 78th birthday this past week. It’s great to see Moe continuing to get better every day.

The Bradshaw family (Jack Bradshaw Show Superintendents) celebrated Marion Bradshaw’s 80th birthday. While they were at it, they also celebrated Susan Bradshaw MacLyman’s husband Keith’s birthday as well.

Also celebrating birthdays this week are: Robert Scott, Vickie Mauk, Dorothy Schuerman, David Stout, Daniel Magee, Valerie Atkinson, Milan Lint, Colton Johnson, Julie Lee and Linda Pitts.

Please stay safe my friends, and don’t forget to keep an eye out for our new exhibitors: A little act of kindness can go a long way! Until next time…
