I have not had the pleasure of attending the Harvest Moon Cluster aka “Del Valle” for several years. Last time I was there, it was at the old showgrounds. It was a pleasure to be there this year at its new home in Santa Rosa, California. We had beautiful weather, beautiful dogs, and a beautiful time! This was the first year the show was sponsored by Purina Pro Plan, and I attended in that capacity. There were many specialties at the cluster including the Bearded Collie Club of America National.
In addition to the show, there was a comedy night for exhibitors and volunteers on Friday complete with pizza and beverages. What a great way to bring fanciers together for a few laughs and a bit of quality time.
We have all heard of exhibitors using Air Tags to track their dogs, luggage, and other important items. Alexis Jones has come up with another great use for those air tags! She uses it to track the handler! What a great idea! This works great until the handler you are assisting is “on to you” and takes the air tag out of their pocket. Alexis, YOU ARE A GENIUS!
The American Kennel Club Board of Directors has removed the restriction for Sweepstakes, Futurity and Maturity judges. Effective January 1, 2025, those who judge Sweepstakes, Futurity and Maturity will be permitted to exhibit in other classes on the same day. While some think this is a good idea, others are not as happy about it. What are your thoughts? Email me at deb.cooper@caninechronicle.com or comment below. We have had some great discussions on our Facebook page about recent topics. Let’s keep them going!
It is with great sadness I report that our sport has lost a bright, sparkling light. Johnny Shoemaker left us this past week. Johnny was well-known for his “sparkling” kindness, and his enthusiasm for the Pee Wee competition. He did not know a stranger and was welcoming to all. Dog shows will not be the same without him. Rest In Peace, my friend. Until we meet again.
On a happier note, Will Alexander is home and getting stronger every day! I had no doubt that he would push the envelope in his recovery, which he has done. He is up and walking but following the doctor’s orders to not over-do it! We look forward to having you back with us at shows soon, Will!
Healing thoughts to Arvind DeBraganca who is recovering from back surgery. Arvind has a few weeks of healing to go but I hear he will be back soon. Get well soon! You will be running those left-handed circles in no time.
Heads up to all handlers who wish to be listed as ‘Agent’ in dog show catalogs. The deadline of October 31, 2024 to get your proof of completion of the Darkness to Light program to the AKC compliance department is coming soon. If your information is not received by Judge Compliance at judgecompliance@akc.org by October 31, 2024, you will NOT be listed as an agent in catalogs effective January 1, 2025. Information can be found at https://www.akc.org/sports/conformation/publishing-handlers-agents-dog-show-catalogs/.
After a successful judging career, Mareth Kipp has retired from judging. She judged her last assignment in Springfield, Illinois this past weekend and awarded Terrier Group 1 to the breed that started her journey in dogs. Congratulations, Mrs. Kipp. You will be missed by so many. Your eye for a dog and expertise will be hard to replace.
Roz Kramer was having a different type of fun recently while on a lovely trip to Italy. Thanks so much for sharing such beautiful photographs and memories! Safe travels home!
Several fanciers are celebrating wedding anniversaries this week. Happy Anniversary to Janice Hayes and Eric Ciceron, Tim and Lisa Thomas, John and Kristin Lyons, and Beep and Shari Lee. Best wishes to all of you for many more happy, healthy years ahead!
Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week include: Ethan Coye, Annie Balotti-Paleen, Jill Bell, Cheryl Purcell, Betty-Anne Stenmark, Gary Andersen, Keith Pautz, Diana McGarvey, Michael Brantley, Andrew Mueller, Juliet Clendenon and Liz Muthard. May you all have another trip around the sun that’s better than the last.
To all of the Junior Handlers out there who have no money and do not come from a dog background, who have no idea what to do to achieve their goals and are practicing showing a dog in conformation with a 6 year-old, mixed-breed shelter dog with a raggedy leash and a flat collar, unsure if they are stacking the dog correctly or not but have plans on handling at Westminster one day…DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, STOP TRYING!!!!!!
Keep your eyes open for that Westminster Invite list, my friends!!! It will be out any minute now! Get those entries in!!!!
I will see you soon down the road. Be safe, stay well, and hug those canines! Until next time…
