If you have not had the opportunity to read our Publisher’s comments this month, (https://caninechronicle.com/current-articles/from-the-publisher-46/) I encourage you to do so. The topic is judging, and the reasons why people judge. Currently, there are over 3,000 licensed AKC judges. Based on the panels at shows over the last couple years, that number is hard to believe. It seems–to me–it’s the same judges on the panels week after week, all over the country. More to the point are Tom’s thought-provoking questions: “Do most judges seek assignments because they enjoy finding the best dogs or because they enjoy finding the best company for dinner?” Does having the same core group of judges passing judgement on the same breeds every week, year-in and year-out negatively affect the breeds? And does this impact the entries at shows negatively or positively?
To the judges, I’d like to suggest that you explore these questions as you embark upon your next assignment. There is nothing wrong with enjoying the social aspect of our sport. In fact, that plays a big part for me nowadays. I, however, am not attending shows for the purpose of judging.
To the show chairs, perhaps a bit more creativity with the judging panel may benefit the sport as a whole, the well-being of the breeds, and the entries at your shows.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the topic. Please email me at deb.cooper@caninechronicle.com.
I was sorry to miss attending Montgomery County Kennel Club this past weekend. In my opinion, it is truly one of the most prestigious shows in our sport. I tuned in to AKCTV from the comfort of my couch. My friends looked a bit cold and uncomfortable, but everyone was still smiling from ear to ear. What was not to smile about? They were attending the greatest Terrier Show on Earth, and sunglasses were needed during the groups!!!! I hope to be able to join in the fun next year!
Those exhibitors who made the little more than an hour trip from Macungie Park to Devon for Saturday’s show braved some high winds and rain. While others opted to take Saturday off and hope for better weather for Sunday’s Montgomery County show. Maybe someday Saturday’s show will be held at Macungie Park, as well. One can only hope, right?
Congratulations to Peggy Beisel Mcilwaine who attended her 44th Montgomery County this year!
You will recall several months back I wrote about a French Bulldog who lost its life in a van while those responsible for his care were judging in California. The judges have been suspended from all AKC privileges for a 5-year period. They had until October 5th to appeal the American Kennel Club’s decision. I will keep everyone updated on the developments of this very unfortunate case.
Invitations have been sent out for the National Owner-Handled Series finals being held in Orlando at the AKC National Championship. If you were expecting an invitation and have not received it, I encourage you to contact AKC. Entries are now open for the big show!
Several fanciers are on the journey of a lifetime in Africa! Doug Johnson and Jamie Hubbard, Patty Keenan, Adam and Lucas King, and Channa Butcher are spending some quality time in Kenya! The trip looks amazing, and we are all enjoying the wonderful photos!
Dennis Johnson is checking another item off his bucket list as he enjoys a hunting trip in Saskatoon, Canada. Have a great time and a safe journey home, my friend!
The Bugaboo Old English Sheepdog family suffered a great loss this past weekend as “Swagger”, GCh. Bubagoo’s Picture Perfect, passed away in his sleep at home. “Swagger” was not only the epitome of the breed, but he was also the consummate show dog. He had a very impressive career including #1 Herding Dog for 2013 and 2014, #2 Dog All Breeds for 2014, and Reserve Best In Show from the classes at the Westminster Kennel Club in 2013. Most importantly, “Swagger” was an amazing ambassador for the breed, as well as the sport of purebred dogs. Sincerest sympathies to the Johnson family at this very sad time.
It is with great sadness that I report Stan Flowers passed away. Stan was an icon in the sport of purebred dogs. He and his wife, Jane, bred Bulldogs, French Bulldogs and Boxers under the Evergreen Kennel Name. Stan was very dedicated to his beloved Jane who unexpectedly passed away last year. Rest well, Stan. You will be sorely missed by everyone.
Manchester Terrier fancier Jerri Hobbs passed away. Jerri was a passionate breeder and lovely lady. Our sympathies to her family and friends at this most difficult time.
Happy Anniversary to Beep and Shari Lee. May the two of you enjoy many more happy, healthy, prosperous years ahead.
Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week include Darryl Vice, Jon Cole, Tristan Lawrence, Ralph Whitman, Justin Smithey, Gabby Gilbeau, Ilaria Biondi, Teena Uyeno, Maureen McCreery and Becky Laing.
This week’s thought is: “If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you!!”
Be safe out there, my friends. Wherever your travels take you, remember you take the best dog home! Be kind to those around you–win or lose. I will see you soon down the road. Until next time…
