It is hard to believe that we are well into November already! Doesn’t it seem that we just started the show year? And with the year-end comes the AKC/Royal Canin National Championship in Orlando. Entries for the National Championship held Saturday and Sunday December 17th and 18th and Puppy Stakes held Friday, December 16th, close today on November 9th at 3 PM Central Time. The superintendent is Onofrio Dog Shows. Entries for the Group shows and specialty shows leading up to the National Championship close on November 16th. MB-F is the superintendent for Space Coast Kennel Club, Brevard Kennel Club, and Central Florida Kennel Club shows. The Group shows also close on Wednesday the 16th. The superintendent for the Group shows is Onofrio. Be sure to get those entries in, my friends; and get them in to the correct superintendent!!
A heads-up to those that are attending the Ocala shows this weekend. The possibility of severe weather associated with the tropical storm could occur on Thursday and/or Friday. Please note the shows cannot operate if winds exceed 35 miles per hour. Keep your eye on social media for updates from the clubs. Weather is expected to be beautiful for the weekend!!
Westminster has announced the much-anticipated venue and dates for the 147th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. We are going to Queens, my friends! Westminster 2023 will be held Monday and Tuesday, May 8th and 9th at the USTA Billy Jean King Tennis Center. Obedience and Agility are tentatively scheduled for the preceding Saturday, May 6th. Group judging will be held Monday and Tuesday evening at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The stadium has a capacity for 24,000 spectators and is the largest tennis stadium in the world. Stay tuned as our friends at Westminster work through the details.
Over the past several years, the members of the Westminster Kennel Club have demonstrated the ability to orchestrate their show at several different venues under the most difficult circumstances. In my opinion, moving to a venue such as the Sports Complex in Queens will be better for the dogs and exhibitors than the Pier/Madison Square Garden combination. The cost of attending should be a bit easier on the wallet than trying to attend the show in Midtown Manhattan, and the beautiful park setting–in May–should make it easier to give our canine friends a nice walk outdoors. For those lucky enough to be invited to the groups, it will certainly be easier not having to transport dogs to MSG. I will keep everyone posted as more details are released!
Meet the Breeds will be returning to Midtown Manhattan in 2023. The event will be held at the Javits Center on January 28th and 29th.
Here’s more good news! The Roberts Centre in Wilmington, Ohio has opened a restaurant and a Starbucks inside the facility! What a great addition!
The fancy is mourning the tragic death of Nick Carroll. Nick was only 15 years old. Fanciers who had the privilege to cross paths with Nick remember him for his kind heart and generosity. He showed in Juniors, and he also loved to show his Great Dane in breed competition. Nick loved all animals, and he loved to train his dogs, and even his parrot, Zazzy, who adored him. There will be a celebration of Nick’s life at the Council Bluffs show on November 26, 2022. Nick’s family and friends request that fanciers wear Blue, Nick’s favorite color, that day to honor his memory.
The tragic loss of this fine young man must remind us to not tolerate meanness or bullying.
Tuni and Ernie Conti are on a great adventure in St. Martin. Enjoy your trip, my friends. What a great way to celebrate Ernie’s birthday!
Celebrating anniversaries this week are Dylan Kipp Keith and Chris Keith and George and Cathy Milutinovich. Celebrate in style, and may you have many more great years ahead.
Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week include: The “Little” Basenji Sister, Julie Jones, Alberto (Eldorado) Montila, Peter Green, Jim Noe, Lynn Olds, Candice Duclos, Ernie Conti, Linda Hurlebaus, Kenny Craig, Tom Martenson, Rex Linn, Alyssa Beutler, Wally Sommerfelt, Bill Hempel, John McCartney and Deb Caywood. Make it a great one, my friends!
My thought for this week is in honor of Nick Carroll (thank you Heidi Hartman): Let your child be the weird kid. Let them be the funny kid, the quiet kid, the smart kid, the athletic kid, the theater kid, the numbers kid, the teacher’s pet, the chatter box, the valedictorian, the middle of the pack, the “barely made it” kid. Just DON’T let them be the mean kid! We must stop tolerating mean!
May your week be filled with beautiful dogs, loving friendships, and cherished memories. Remember, tomorrow is not promised! I will see you all down the road. Until next time…
