Table Talk · November 3, 2021

I have returned from the Poodle Club of America National Specialty held at the Purina Event Center. PCA is one of my favorite national specialties. While this year’s entry was down a bit, the volunteers of PCA did not disappoint! Known for their attention to detail and venue decoration, this year they were able to incorporate the fall theme which is different for them as their national is normally held in April. One of the things I love the most about attending PCA is watching the camaraderie amongst the poodle fanciers.

As you can imagine, so much work goes in to trimming and prepping poodles for the ring. It never ceases to amaze me how helpful exhibitors are to each other. Congratulations to all the volunteers and exhibitors for a fantastic show! I look forward to seeing everyone back at the Purina Event Center in April for PCA 2022.

The Golden Retriever Club of America held their National Specialty last week at the lovely World Equestrian Center in Ocala, Florida. They had a record entry of specials, and an entry of nearly 900 over the 6 days! The facility is gorgeous! If you are looking for a facility for your National Specialty (or your all-breed dog show, for that matter), check out the Ocala World Equestrian Center! Everyone who visits “WEC” has nothing but great things to say about it.

Those attending English Springer Spaniel and English Setter National Specialties in Mesquite, Texas, this week should take extra precautions as there has been an outbreak of vehicle break-ins there. The Siberian fanciers staying at the Hampton Inn in Mesquite experienced theft of catalytic converters and other auto theft. The Siberian Club hired additional security after being notified of the issue. Hopefully the Springer and Setter Clubs will follow the practice.

Those fanciers who attend shows held at the Roberts Centre (Royal Canin Ring) in Wilmington, Ohio may want to check out the alternative lodging just a few minutes away. Check out https://worldequestriancenter.com/wilmington-oh/stay as these accommodations are dog-friendly, reasonably priced, and convenient!

Thanks to many of you who responded to last week’s discussion topic regarding electronic judging programs, premiums, etc. While there are some that are struggling with the electronic nature of things, most of the comments I received indicate that most of exhibitors are adapting well to the “new” way. For those of you who have established a routine, how do you ensure you do not miss entries? Since premiums are not mailed, and are rarely e-mailed, do you have a way to ensure you do not miss an entry cut-off? The Canine Chronicle has a terrific show calendar, and this is one way to search for shows, and get those closing dates on your radar. Are there any other suggestions?  Shoot me an email at deb.cooper@caninechronicle.com.

Healing thoughts to Mark Bettis who was hospitalized after experiencing chest pains at the dog show last week. Fanciers banded together to help Tabatha get dogs shown and make sure Mark had what he needed at the hospital.

Clint Livingston was hospitalized in Ocala, Florida after not being able to catch his breath while running around the ring. Clint is in ICU in Ocala with saddle pulmonary emboli and a blood clot in his leg. I heard they removed the clot in his leg on Monday. Get well soon, Clint!

Keith Bailey is healing well from her recent shoulder surgery. You will be good as new, Keith!  Take it easy, do your physical therapy, and we will see you soon!

A message to those of you planning to attend the Westminster Kennel Club dog show in New York in January; be sure to save Saturday, January 22nd for the 40th Anniversary celebration of the Museum of the Dog. Stay tuned for more information!

Happy Anniversary to Harry and Lisa Miller! Congratulations to Lisa for her recent trip around the ring! I have no doubt that she will return to the ring with more frequency soon! It’s great to have you back at the shows, my friend. May both of you enjoy many more years of love and happiness together!

Happy 85th birthday to Peter Green!!!!! Also celebrating birthdays this week are Rick Gschwender, David Foley (David and Nancy celebrated David’s special day in Las Vegas), Becca Pentecost, Peggy Browne, Kathy Garcia, Brenda Weiss, Jerry Klein, Dasha Milinarich, Chris Manelopoulos, David Williams, Hal Biermann, Ernesto Lara. Also, I want to wish a very special happy birthday to my better half, Robert Cooper!!!

Be safe in your travels, my friends. I am off to Peace, Love and Dogs in Northern California! If you are attending Woofstock, be sure to stop by the Purina Booth and say Hi!!  Until next time…
