The sport and processes as we know it are certainly evolving in these unprecedented times! The good ole’ days of doing entries on Wednesday AM for all show closings seems to be a thing of the past–at least for now! It seems that each time fanciers make an adjustment for a new process (i.e. being concerned about show opening dates–and times!!!–instead of focusing on when shows close) a new “wrench” is thrown in our direction. The Mississippi Gulf Coast shows being held December 4-6, 2020 opened for entries on the Onofrio website on November 5th. US Mail and phone-in entries for this show opened on November 6th. The original premium list posted on the Onofrio website stated this and it also said there would be no third party or walk-in entries accepted for these shows. The following day, a revised premium list was posted with clarification that handlers would not be considered a third party for the purpose of entering dogs for this cluster. As a result, those that use entry services for their entries would either have to enter their dogs themselves online, or phone their entries in to Onofrio.
Unfortunately, for those fanciers who utilize third party entry services, this additional protocol has caused somewhat of an inconvenience. If entry services are going to provide the same level of service they normally do for their clients, the only choice they have is to enter their client’s dogs online utilizing the Onofrio entry system, thereby charging their clients a double fee.
Fanciers should note that the decision regarding how to accept entries rests solely with the show giving club. Show superintendents are obligated to follow the wishes of their client, the show-giving club, regarding how entries will be accepted. If exhibitors are concerned or unhappy about how entries for a show are being accepted, they should contact the show-giving club, not the superintendent.
I will be interested to see if the Mississippi Gulf Coast shows reach their 1,200 dog per day limit. With more and more shows happening, exhibitors once again have a choice. I will be sure to report back on what the entries were for this cluster, given the restrictive nature of the entry process.
Sadly, there were dogs shown at the Oklahoma City cluster that appeared to have kennel cough. If you attended these shows, it is a good idea to keep a close eye on your dogs. If they exhibit any symptoms of kennel cough, please keep them at home!
