By the time you read this, most of us are already on the road to New York for Westminster or prepping to leave in the next couple of days! It seems to me that time keeps flying by faster and faster! (this could NOT POSSIBLY have anything to do with my age, right?)
For those of you setting up at the show for Monday judging, please remember move-in begins at 3 PM on Sunday. John Miller and his crew with Site Control, more affectionately known as ‘THE MEN IN ORANGE’, will be working very hard to make everything associated with moving in to the show, parking, and getting to and from the hotels run as smooth as possible for all exhibitors. You can’t imagine how difficult and exhausting their job is so please BE KIND TO THE MEN IN ORANGE! Tell them thank you, then tell them again!
Please do not forget the Barks and Bubbles fundraising event on Monday afternoon at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center. The event will raise funds for the AKC Museum of the Dog and there are still tickets available!!! Please go to www.museumofthedog.org for tickets and more information! This should be a fabulous event and it’s conveniently located at the show venue.
Another special treat for those attending Westminster this year will be an exhibit of Fan Yu’s bronze sculptures. The exhibit will be set up at the Cherrybrook booth. Be sure to make time to stop by the exhibit and meet the artist!
As I write this week’s column, I am headed back from the Utah Beehive Cluster in lovely South Jordan, Utah. I think this area must be one of the prettiest in the country! The hard-working members of the cluster make every effort to make the cluster a positive experience for all. From a Best of the Best Junior Handler competition with lovely prizes and rosettes for the kids, to a luncheon BB-Q for all, this cluster always gives exhibitors a positive experience! If your club is looking for a cluster out west to hold a specialty, I encourage you to reach out to Cluster Chair Mike Van Tassell.
I frequently remind folks to do what you can to help and be kind to new exhibitors. This weekend in Utah I witnessed a seasoned dog man, who is now an AKC judge, stop photographs so he could help a new exhibitor with presentation tips. Again, the following day, the same judge was helping another new exhibitor with prepping their dog for a photograph. Thank you, Jim Moses, for your kindness and efforts! It is actions like this that keep our new people coming back!!!
When leaving Utah, my colleague forgot she had purchased a stripping knife at the dog show. As luck would have it, the TSA found it! Sadly, she was given two choices after their discovery: surrender the stripping knife or go back to the counter and check it. Back to the ticketing counter she went and, Angie, the lovely Delta agent offered to mail the knife and would not take any money. She would not even give out her last name. She said she just wanted to pay it forward and be kind! There are still kind people out there! Thank you, Angie from Delta Airlines! Learn from Lynn’s mistake: if you purchase stripping knives and plan on getting on a plane, don’t try to carry them on!!
Bruce and Tara Schultz were off on a lovely Hawaiian vacation to celebrate a very important event. Bruce’s successful fight against his latest bout with cancer. All the best to you two! May you have many more love-filled years ahead.
Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week include: Lee Kronovich, Pam Lambie, Melanie Sorice, Heather Johnson, Patrina Odette, Dylan Kipp-Keith and Patrice Lawrence. May you all have the best year yet!!
For those of you who will be in New York, please stop by the Chronicle booth and say hi! Come share your experiences so we can broadcast them to the fancy via Table Talk Live!!
I leave you with this thought: In the presence of greatness, we are inspired to reach higher–and together we all win!
I hope to see you somewhere soon. Be safe in your travels, and don’t forget that act of kindness!! Until next time…
