For the first time in eight years I was home to celebrate my wedding anniversary with my dearly beloved Robert–my husband, friend, and partner for the last 34 years. I am not sure how I can actually be old enough to be married that long, but just like that, 34 years later here we are! I have spent the last eight Memorial Day/anniversary weekends in Southern California at the Mission Circuit. I had a Zoom cocktail hour with those that I probably would have been dining with live had I been at the circuit as originally planned. Thank goodness for Zoom! It helps me feel connected to those I miss so much.
I planted a garden for the first time in my life!! Under normal circumstances it is not feasible as I am not home to take care of it and gardening is just not Robert’s thing. Stay tuned for updates on just how green my thumb really is! I am fortunate to have some very experienced gardeners among my friends. Thanks so much to Larry Cornelius, Vicki Cushman, Tiffany Skinner, Bill McFadden and Nina Fetter for putting up with my ridiculous questions. I would say I won’t bother you anymore, but whether you like it or not my friends, you will be hearing from me a lot! It makes me feel better that I am using this extended home time somewhat constructively and doing something that I always wanted to do but couldn’t. I highly recommend thinking about what that one thing is you would love to do but can’t under normal circumstances, due to travel, and try to do it!
The COVID-19 fund established by Take The Lead still has funds available to cover health insurance for fanciers. If you have not completed the assistance application, I strongly suggest that you do so. You will be required to submit your health insurance bills and your 2018 income tax return. With those documents, the process is very straightforward and Take The Lead is responding very quickly. There may be additional funding available for those who have already submitted premiums for May and June. Please keep your eyes and ears open for updates from Take the Lead, and if you have questions, please reach out to them. Here is a direct link to the online application: https://takethelead.org/covid-19-fund-application/
I was encouraged to see the list of shows for June and July that are still scheduled to occur! Pending the mayor’s decision regarding the number of people allowed at a social gathering, the Western Ohio Summer Cluster is still scheduled for June 26-28. Those of you who know Nina Fetter as well as I do know that if there is any way to make this show happen, she is the woman for the job! If social gathering limitations prevent the cluster from occurring at the end of June, it will be rescheduled in the July/August time frame. Fanciers should continue to make plans to attend the following shows in June and July:
Western Ohio Cluster, Lima, Ohio – June 26-28
Kenai Kennel Club, Soldotna, Alaska – July 10-12
Kennel Club of Greater Victoria/Bexar County Kennel Club, San Antonio, TX – July 18-19
Marshfield Area Kennel Club, Marshfield, WI – July 23-26
Greenville Kennel Club, Greenville, South Carolina – July 23-26
Lackawanna Kennel Club/Bald Eagle Kennel Club of Williamsport, Bloomsburg, PA – July 23-26
Central Wyoming Kennel Club, Casper, Wyoming – July 24-26
Cook Inlet Kennel Club, Palmer, Alaska – July 24-26
Steel Valley Cluster, Canfield, OH – July 30- August 2nd
Those of you who have not joined the Facebook page The Show Must Go On – Handlers Helping Dog Clubs, please consider joining. This group is an excellent resource for clubs who need volunteers to help with their shows, and to discuss ideas to enable shows to resume. You do not need to be a professional handler to join and volunteer your time!
That light is getting brighter every day, my friends! Our community continues to work together to get things back on track! We are all missing dog shows and our friends more as every day passes.
Keep your eyes open for more Facebook Live Kennel Visits on the Canine Chronicle Facebook page! These kennel visits are growing in popularity. If you miss one, be sure to check www.CanineChronicle.tv as they are all posted there after the live broadcast.
I was saddened to hear that Tom Bishop, owner of the 2010 Westminster Kennel Club Best In Show Winning Colored Bull Terrier “Rufus” was hit by a drunk driver and has passed away. After “Rufus” retired, he and Tom did extensive Therapy Dog work. Our condolences to Tom’s friends and family.
Sadly, “London” aka GCH Jaset Satisfaction, the Standard Poodle beautifully handled and loved by Ann Rairigh, passed away at 12 years old. London was the winner of 100 Best In Shows, including Best In Show at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship. After London retired from the show ring, he was the star companion to Ann and her husband. I am so sorry for your loss, Ann. “London” will never be forgotten by the fancy.
Condolences to Sandy Mesmer who lost her mom, Teedy Bergstrom, at 98 years old. Teedy was in a memory care facility and, fortunately, Sandy was able to see her before she passed away.
Get well wishes to Lois DeMers’ mom who was hospitalized with pneumonia. Hang in there, Lois. Best wishes to your mom for a speedy recovery.
Several of our friends join me this week in celebrating anniversaries: Bill and Taffe McFadden are celebrating 35 years of wedded bliss, Gabriel and Ivonne Rangel are also celebrating their big day, Betty-Anne Stenmark and Ben Thum are celebrating their wedding anniversary, and Erin Kerfoot and Ryan McGlothlin are also celebrating their big day. An unforgettable anniversary day for all of you, indeed! May you enjoy many more years of health and happiness.
Celebrating birthdays this week are: Gay Glazbrook, Pistol Tingen, Ric Plaut, Larry Ward, Cristina Freitag, Amanda Giles, Katrina Cobb, Oliva Hodgkinson, Conor McFadden, Mardee Ward, David Daugherty, Kat Moyer, Jake Haycock, Lori Wilson-Paust, Jennifer McClintock and Greg Smith. Happy Birthday to all of you! Soon we will see each other and celebrate.
My thought for this week: It’s okay to clap for your friends if their dream takes off before yours.
Stay safe and stay well, my friends. We will see each other soon! Until next time…
