Table Talk · May 19, 2021

With the recently revised CDC guidelines regarding masks, things have gotten a bit confusing for our dog shows. Judges and exhibitors are asking if they need to continue to wear masks while judging or showing dogs. The guidelines that have been offered by AKC Judging Operations say that state, county, and venue guidelines take precedence over the general CDC guidelines.  Some clubs and venues have stated that vaccinated individuals are no longer required to wear masks. In these cases, vaccinated individuals may be asked by clubs to produce proof of their vaccinations. As a result, if you are vaccinated and prefer to shed your face covering where allowed, it is a good idea to have your vaccination card handy, just in case they ask. It’s up to you as well as the state and local laws and guidelines as to whether you have to provide proof of vaccination.  The BEST news is that, in my opinion, we are in the home stretch!!! While things may be a bit confusing and inconsistent for the next few weeks, I think we are closing in on the opportunity to see each other’s smiles again!

As many of us prepare for the 145th Westminster Kennel Club dog show, people have many questions, which I hope will be answered in my Table Talk segment with Gail Miller Bisher, Director of Communications for the Westminster Kennel Club.  Keep your eyes on the Canine Chronicle website at caninechronicle.com, the Canine Chronicle Facebook page, and Canine Chronicle TV for our segment later this week! In the meantime, here is some information for those that have asked for it. Breed judging will be outdoors under a large tent. Group judging will be in an air-conditioned tent. It may be warm, with a breeze off the water, so you may want to bring a couple of different clothing options. There will be no power or bathing available on the show grounds.

Thank you to everyone who sent questions for our upcoming segment! I am excited to visit with Gail and provide our viewers with much anticipated information.

October is another exciting month for the sport of purebred dogs. It marks the Morris and Essex KC dog show and the Montgomery County Kennel Club cluster! This year, Hatboro Kennel Club will join Montgomery County Kennel Club at Macungie Memorial Park. The busy week will begin on Wednesday, October 6th at Colonial Park Gardens in Somerset, New Jersey, with Morris & Essex, which was rescheduled from last year due to its cancellation because of COVID-19. Then, Hatboro will hold their shows at Macungie on Thursday, and Friday, October 7th and 8th, and Montgomery County will be held on Sunday, October 10th at the same venue. I look forward to seeing all the beautiful terriers, and all the fabulous Morris & Essex outfits, among other things.  I will keep everyone posted on plans as they evolve!

Bonnie Wagaman has had a very busy several weeks! Congratulations to her on the birth of her twin grandbabies! Bonnie and her husband have sold their West Coast home and will be relocating to be closer to those beautiful grandchildren. We wish you the best, my friend!  Enjoy those grandbabies! Best wishes for a smooth cross-county move!

Those fanciers attending the shows in Marietta, Ohio this coming weekend will have the opportunity to visit Cassie Clark’s Cozy Kitchen Restaurant which is only 4 blocks from the show grounds! Cassie was a fixture at West Coast dogs shows for so long. She is well-known for her talent as a chef. If you are in Marietta, don’t miss this opportunity to support Cassie and enjoy her fabulous home cooking for breakfast and lunch!

Our condolences to English Cocker Spaniel breeder and owner Liz Neff who lost her husband last week. Liz is well-known in sporting circles and her husband’s passing was a shock to many of us. Please say a prayer for her during this sorrowful time.

Several fanciers are celebrating anniversaries this week! Gina and Cliff Wieser are celebrating 38 years of wedded bliss. Tuni and Ernie Conti are also celebrating their anniversary. Rhonda and John Holloway are celebrating their anniversary in Canada! Enjoy your special day, my friends!

We have quite the list of members of our dog family celebrating birthdays this week. They are: Judy Descutner, Jay Richardson, Tony Vacha, Bill McFadden, Kim Rudzik, Brenda Combs, Bert Rettick, Brendan Coleman, Alex Mossotti, Kim Haupt, Dominic Finlay, Geno Sisneros, Kim Langlands, Tammie Wilcox, Kate DeSanto and Klayton Harris.  Happy Birthday to all!  I hope you are able to celebrate your birthday with friends and family!

Here is a thought I believe many will appreciate:  Don’t forget to thank the difficult dogs that made your life hell.  Without them, you wouldn’t be the handler you are today!

I look forward to seeing everyone’s beautiful smiles very soon! Be safe out there and pitch in wherever possible. Clubs are still in need of stewards and volunteers! You would be surprised how good it feels to help out at the show! Until next time…
