Table Talk · March 9, 2022

I had the pleasure of spending the last several days in Pomona, California for the Malibu and Beverly Hills Kennel Clubs and Great Western Terrier Association shows. I was able to pitch in and help Debbie Campbell-Freeman and Ron Freeman on Wednesday and Thursday by ring stewarding; a task which I had not had the pleasure of performing for some time. Not only did it feel great to help a club that needed assistance, but I had a great time. I find stewarding a great opportunity to continue to increase my general knowledge of dogs. Stewarding gives one a different view of the dogs being judged, and a closer view of how the dogs are being evaluated.  There is a very good reason stewarding is on the list of requirements to become an AKC Licensed Judge!

This was the first year that the Malibu Kennel Club joined Beverly Hills and Great Western thereby making it a 5-day cluster. The Malibu Kennel Club sorely missed member and friend Dana Pearl, and their shows were held in her memory. The Fairplex in Pomona, California is a great venue for a dog show, with a hotel within a short walking distance, and a lovely climate-controlled indoor facility. Debbie and Ron worked very hard and did a terrific job with their first show on this date in this location. Thank you to all the volunteers who made the cluster the wonderful experience it was!! This is the same facility where the Mission Circuit has historically held their Memorial Day shows.

Unfortunately, facilities such as the Fairplex come at a very high price and the Mission Circuit can no longer afford the rent. They will be relocating to the lovely Sports Complex in San Bernardino this year, and they will hold their shows on their regularly scheduled Memorial Day weekend dates. I had the pleasure of touring the facility where the shows will be held in May, and it is absolutely lovely! The volunteers are working very hard to make the Mission Circuit the terrific cluster that we have become accustomed to; in fact, they are already holding pre-show meetings, laying out rings, ensuring the appropriate amount of power is available and ironing out RV Parking, grooming space, etc. Thank you to one and all that are working so hard to make this important Southern California circuit happen this year!

Those of you who have not sent in your free reserved grooming for Louisville to Nina Fetter should do so immediately! The reservation form can be found in the premium list located at www.infodog.com. Reservations should be sent to Louisvillegrooming@yahoo.com  An alphabetical list of reservations that have been received and will be posted this week on the Louisville Kennel Club Facebook page and Nina Fetter’s Facebook page.

The situation in Ukraine is on everyone’s mind. In the case of fanciers, we are naturally concerned about our fellow fanciers who are trapped there or trying to find their way to safety.  Ribbons were offered in Pomona this past weekend to raise awareness and funds for our friends who have been affected by the Russian invasion. While Nestlé Purina does not have a plant in the Ukraine, they are doing what they can to help those in this terrible situation.

There will be fundraising efforts at Crufts. All donations made to the Kennel Club Charitable Trust between now and midnight on March 13th will be directed toward the Ukranian appeal and thereafter a donation option for the Ukraine will remain on the website. There will be collection points throughout the show. You can find a link to the Kennel Club Charitable Trust at http://caninechronicle.com/?p=225913.

I am very pleased to report that Lisa Miller has completed her last chemotherapy treatment!  Congratulations, Lisa! You are an amazing example of bravery, perseverance and determination, and we are all glad that you have put this chapter behind you. Best of luck running those left-handed circles, my friend!!!

I am sorry to report that AKC Judge and longtime Norwegian Elkhound breeder Dr. Robert Indeglia has passed away. I have many fond memories Dr. Bob over the years and will miss him greatly. Condolences to his family and friends at this sad time.

David and Kristyn Stout and Michael Shepherd and Dale Sullens are celebrating anniversaries this week! Happy Anniversary and may you lovebirds have many more!

Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week are:  Luke Baggenstos, Susan Sprung, Red Tatro, Keith Bailey, Lois DeMers, Tara Martin-Rowell, Chip Rainwater, Kellie Fitzgerald, Lauren Hay-Lavitt, Diana Wilson, Wendy Bettis and Jean Gauchat-Hargis. Enjoy your special day my friends and may you have many more!

I invite those of you who will be attending the Country Music Cluster in Shelbyville, Tennessee to stop by the Purina Booth, say ‘hi’, and pick up a copy of the new issue of The Canine Chronicle while you are there! I am still looking for interesting ideas for segments for Table Talk Live, so bring an idea or two along with you.

This week’s thought, courtesy of Peggy McDill:  In order for a dog to be stubborn, he must first understand completely what is asked of him and then choose to disobey. There are very few stubborn dogs in the world. There are, however, many dogs who are untrained!

Be safe in your travels, hug your pooches, and be kind to everyone! I’ll see you soon down the road!  Until next time…
