LET’S HAVE A DOG SHOW, MY FRIENDS! The Southern Handler’s Charity League is working closely with Onofrio Dog Shows and local Oklahoma area Kennel Clubs to hold a 4-day cluster of all-breed shows June 27-30 at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma. Entries will be limited to 1200 dogs. Entries will close on June 10 or when the limit is reached. The premium list will be posted at www.onofrio.com this week.
The show will follow AKC recommended best practices. In addition to every one’s safety, one of the primary goals of the cluster is to work through the issues–known and unknown–that may be faced as we navigate through this unprecedented territory. There are still many questions that are unanswered, so please be patient while our colleagues tread this complex terrain. Entries are expected to open sometime this week, and I’m sure they will close very quickly! A huge thank you to everyone involved in trying to get us back to what we love… showing dogs with our friends!
There is a lot going on behind the scenes to ensure we get back up and running sooner rather than later. I have a newfound respect for those who are working tirelessly to find alternative show grounds/facilities, working with regulatory agencies for approvals, working through the necessary steps to ensure proper safety protocols are followed, answering calls, emails and messages from concerned fanciers–the list goes on and on. The Facebook Group called The Show Must Go On – Handlers Helping Dog Clubs has proven to be a valuable resource to bring fanciers together to provide support to clubs and enable them to hold shows. This group is currently working on a list of judges that are able and willing to judge upcoming shows. Those AKC Judges who would like to add their names to the list should either go to their Facebook page or message Susan Wagner. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at deb.cooper@caninechronicle.com.
I would like to extend a big thank you to those that are going above and beyond for our sport. Among them are Tabatha Bettis, Susan Wagner, and Kellie Miller who started The Show Must Go On Facebook group, Nina Fetter, Bruce Schwartz, Anna Stromberg, Mary Ellen Macke, and Sarah Krickeberg. I know there are more folks out there working diligently to get us back up and running as well, and I am sorry if I left you out of this list. If you know of someone that deserves a nod, please email me! The Peach Blossom Cluster, The Western Ohio Summer Cluster, The River City Cluster, the Steel Valley Cluster in Canfield, and Montgomery County Kennel Club have tried or are continuing to work very hard to see to it their shows go on! Thank you to one and all for your diligence and dedication.
The Kuvasz National was rescheduled from April 30th to September 4th at Purina Farms in conjunction with an All-Breed show that has been canceled. Sarah Krickeberg has secured approval from the AKC to hold this show on their personal 4-acre property in Illinois.
The Miniature Pinscher National has relocated from New Mexico to Oklahoma City so they can proceed with their show.
The Hickories Circuit has rescheduled their shows for September 10-13 in Whitney Point, NY.
There will be an all-breed match at the Brooksville show grounds–Florida Classic Park at 5360 Lockhart Road, Brooksville, FL–this coming Saturday at 5 PM. The match is hosted by the Pasco Florida Kennel Club, and all central Florida clubs have volunteered their time to help. For more information, visit https://caninechronicle.com/breaking-news/saturday-night-lights-all-breed-match-june-6th-2020-brooksville-fl/. Masks will be required for everyone attending the match.
If you are facing difficult decisions about canceling, postponing or relocating your shows, please reach out for help! I am happy to point anyone needing help in the right direction. Please do not hesitate to email me. The Facebook page mentioned above is also an excellent option.
If life was back to normal, what would you be doing this week? I would be going through my “Woofstock” box and putting together my outfits to pack then head to Northern California for the Woofstock cluster of dog shows. In honor of “Woofstock Week” the club is asking folks to go to the Woofstock Dog Show Facebook page and post some of your photos from past Woofstock shows. I look forward to seeing many fun memories!

Congratulations to Jason Hoke on the wonderful article about him in Madison Magazine. For those of you who are not aware, in addition to being an AKC judge, Jason is also a top-notch chef, and now a restaurateur. Nice job, Jason, we are so proud of you!
I was saddened to learn of the passing of Joe Waterman. Joe was a true icon in the sport. He was the first to professionally exhibit Bichon Frisé upon their AKC recognition, and he was loved by all that knew him. He was a mentor to many, but most importantly, he was a true friend and leader in our sport. Joe will be sincerely missed by the fancy. Condolences to all of Joe’s close friends and family at this difficult time.
Happy Anniversary to Luke and Rowan Baggenstos, Terri and Paul Erickson, and Linda and Gary Rowley. May you all have many more happy, healthy years together.
Celebrating birthdays this week are: Jody Garcini, Guy Fisher, Kim Booth, Dennis Melear, Shawn Nichols, Judy Ellis, Janet Lange, Lois Snyder, and Scott Pfeil.
I look forward to seeing you all very soon! Be safe and stay well! Until next time….
