The Lompoc Kennel Club returned to Ryon Memorial Park this year after taking a hiatus last year due to the condition of the grounds. The members of the Lompoc Kennel Club are working very hard to maintain the long-standing tradition of holding their shows at this venue, and this year the quality of the venue was better but, from reports I have heard, there is still a fair amount of room for improvement. Congratulations to the club on their efforts to hold on to their location. I hope that their hard work pays off and the shows will continue to rebuild to their former glory. While the sighthound specialty entries were down from years past, I heard they still attracted a good entry with outstanding depth and quality. I find this encouraging for the health of our sport.
I am told that temperatures soared to 107 degrees at the Camellia Capital Kennel Club Shows in Lodi, California this past weekend. Fortunately, kennel club volunteers stayed on top of it and provided plenty of water, ice, and fans for exhibitors and dogs. Our hats are off to the show-giving club for your dedication to the comfort and safety of the exhibitors and the dogs.
After many years of holding their shows in the city of Seattle, Washington, the Seattle Kennel Club made the decision to relocate to a venue outside of the city. Seattle KC will move to a less expensive venue in the suburbs, and this move will give exhibitors a more pocketbook-friendly opportunity to attend the shows. The Seattle Kennel Club will keep everyone posted about the changes to their shows via their website and their Facebook page.

I find that one of the most common topics discussed among fanciers is the issue of owner/handlers competing against professional handlers. A toy handler was benched, suspended and fined this past weekend at the Greenville, South Carolina shows for leaving a dog unattended on a table ringside. It seems that the practice of leaving dogs unattended on tables has gotten more common, and is frowned upon by the fancy as a whole. This practice has never been acceptable and everyone, especially those getting paid to show dogs, should know better than to leave a dog on a table without supervision. They can hang themselves if they are in a noose and choose to jump off the table, or if they are loose on the table, they can jump off and injure themselves, get loose, etc. Anyone with knowledge of dogs should know this practice is unacceptable.
The phrase “It’s a small world” rang true once again this past week when Michael Canalizo and Bobby Hutton ran into each other in Amsterdam. Michael was connecting to Stockholm, and Bobby was on his way to another part of Sweden to judge an American Staffordshire Terrier specialty. It really is a small world, after all!
Healing thoughts to Sally Sweat who was hospitalized after a bad fall. She will be laid up for a while, but I am sure we will all see her ringside very soon.
I heard that long-time Miniature Pinscher fancier Mary Swick has passed away. Mary also bred and exhibited Doberman Pinschers and Japanese Chin. Mary will be missed by the fancy and we wish her family and friends sincere condolences at this sad time.
Janice Hayes and Eric Ciceron are off to Hawaii for some much deserved R&R. Janice gets the Boss of the Century award as KayCee Klang is also enjoying the beautiful sites in Hawaii with them. Have a great time guys, and safe travels home!
