And we’re off! The first shows of 2025 are in the rear-view mirror and another year has begun.  For some dogs, new careers are just beginning while others are just a few short weeks before retiring from the ring at Westminster–a venue where many teams say farewell to one another. I encourage everyone to enjoy the journey and not be overly concerned about points and rankings right now. There is a long show year ahead! Best of luck to all.

For the 11th year in a row, I began my show year at the most beautiful show I have ever attended–the Kennel Club of Palm Springs at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, California. This year I believe the weather was the best I have ever experienced at this show! I was down to my last layer before 10 in the morning!

This was the second year at the new site within the grounds and the volunteers of the Kennel Club of Palm Springs knocked it out of the park by addressing concerns they had after last year’s shows. Both group rings were lit up like daylight when the sun went down. The ring setup was changed so it was similar to the layout at the previous site. The grass was like carpet.

Cars were towed from unloading when parked too long or where they should not have been parked. This is NOT a club, or a show issue! There would be no towing if everyone followed the rules and did not treat the unloading zone as their personal parking spots. There would be less congestion to park to unload if everyone showed consideration to others by unloading and moving their vehicles. No, my friends, moving your vehicle down a few spots in unloading does not constitute moving your vehicle.

When leaving the show Sunday evening, an exhibitor with her 13-year-old Doberman stopped to thank those involved with the shows. She walked around the showgrounds with her lovely dog at the conclusion of the show to thank as many Committee members as possible for their hard work. It was truly the best way to end a beautiful show!

The Crew once again did a fantastic job! Thank you to every person who had a role in this year’s show. It was amazing!

It is with great sadness that last week we had to say goodbye to Mike Kennedy, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever exhibitor who was very involved in the Hoosier Kennel Club. I first met Mike when he was working with Booth Photography many, many years ago. He was always very kind and helpful, and I enjoyed visiting with him when we saw each other at shows. Mike will be missed by so many in the fancy.

This past week, we received the new of the passing of Ruthellen Viall after an extended illness.  Ruthellen was a long-time fancier, showing her first dog at 6 years of age. The Canine Chronicle sends our sympathies to her children Courtney Norris and Roger Krieger. Please take the time to read the full memorial at https://caninechronicle.com/featured/in-memory-of-ruthellen-viall/.

For those going to Brooksville this week, make sure you bring your layers! It is tracking to be quite chilly in the mornings! It may be a good idea to dump the water out of the scoop buckets, or at least take your scoops out! We lost many a poop scoop that was frozen in buckets in Brooksville!

Happy 22nd Anniversary to Dennis and Katey Brown. It is hard to believe that you guys could be married for that long! Best wishes for a great year ahead.

Fanciers celebrating birthdays this year include Debbie Melgreen, Kayey Kovar, Laurie Green, Harry Miller, Cliff Weiser, Colette Livingston-Keith, Tammy Seidlitz, Krystal Purcell-Sullivan, Chris Erickson, Lila Holmberg, Garry Newton, Chandler Becker, Eileen Hackett, Ken Latimer and Tara Schultz. May your next trip around the sun be the best yet!

For those of you attending the Rose City Cluster in Portland, please be sure to stop by the Purina booth to say hi and pick up your most recent issue of The Canine Chronicle!

Be safe in your travels, and I look forward to seeing you down the road soon. Until next time…
