Happy New Year to one and all! While we are all hoping for a more “normal” year in 2022, it is unfortunately starting out with the postponement of Westminster… again. A couple days after the announcement, Westminster announced that they would be issuing full refunds for entries, and all those fanciers who were entered would have their entries accepted for the rescheduled 2022 show, with dates to be announced. Many exhibitors are hoping for another June show at the beautiful Lyndhurst Estate. Fingers crossed! Stay tuned.
Those fanciers who have not yet canceled travel arrangements such as hotel accommodations and flight reservations should do so asap, while you can still cancel with no penalty!
In years past, the Indianapolis cluster in February turned into a ghost town on Sunday as fanciers headed to New York for Westminster. This year, the Indy Winter Classic should benefit from the fact that Westminster Kennel Club rescheduled their dates to January before being forced to postpone the show. Let’s hope everyone shows up to support this great cluster in Indianapolis.
Prior to the postponement of Westminster, the Rose City Cluster scheduled for January 19-23 was going to be in the same position as Indianapolis in previous years. As their cluster was concluding on the Sunday prior to the Westminster conformation judging. Fortunately, Westminster made the announcement of the postponement prior to the entry closing for Rose City, giving exhibitors an opportunity to switch gears. Entries for Rose City close today, Wednesday, January 5th at noon!

This past week was a tough one in terms of loss to the sport of purebred dogs. Jo-Ann Kusumoto passed away peacefully in her home after a long battle with lung disease. Jo-Ann was a generous supporter and past board member of the AKC Canine Health Foundation. In addition, she was a great friend and supporter of Take The Lead. Jo-Ann campaigned many top dogs, and always had her beloved pets by her side. Our sympathy goes out to Roy and Jo-Ann’s family and friends at this difficult time.
Merlin Green passed away this past week from pancreatic cancer. Merlin was an AKC Delegate. Many knew him from his involvement with Dandie Dinmont Terriers, Silky Terriers, and Miniature Pinschers. He was everyone’s favorite chiropractor. Merlin’s wife of over 50 years, Susan, is in our thoughts at this sad time.
Clay Williams lost his battle with heart failure this past week. Clay was loved by all that had the pleasure of knowing him, and he will be sorely missed by the fancy. Our sincere sympathy to his partner, Ken and all his family and friends.
David Johnson is back home after recent hip replacement revision surgery. Get well soon, David. We are all looking forward to seeing you in Louisville! With both David and Melinda Lyon on the mend, Louisville will have two of their key cluster volunteers at the helm in March!
Jason Hoke didn’t let the worldwide flight cancellations ground him! He has returned from his trip to Budapest where he judged at the European Dog Show.
Happy Anniversary to Amanda Giles and Daniel Martin! Here is to many more happy, healthy, love-filled years together.
Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week are Mary Miller, Joseph Vergnetti, Deb Shindle, John Constantine-Amodei, Debbie Melgreen, Kayley Kovar, Laurie Green, and Harry Miller.
In what seems fitting for the first week of the new year, I leave you with my thought of the week (thanks to Gina Weiser):
Smudge your house. Stop buying stuff you don’t need. Drink water. Move your body. Eat less crap. Block the idiots. Clear the clutter. Let go of the nonsense. Make room for something new, something fresh, something really, really good!
Be safe, my friends. Help a newbie and thank those hard-working show volunteers! Until next time…
