Table Talk · January 20, 2021

My heart is filled with hope after taking a look at this past weekend’s slate of shows!  There were several shows to choose from, and there were good entries at all of them, along with some nice competition!  Our West Coast friends continue to drive many miles to attend shows.  Those of you who are fortunate enough to have dog shows closer than a couple thousand miles to their home should be thankful!

I have heard discussions over the past several months among judges and exhibitors about “COVID puppies”.  Some judges have expressed frustration that the pandemic has been used as an excuse to exhibit untrained or under-socialized dogs.  Some exhibitors have expressed frustration that some judges are not giving consideration to those “COVID puppies” who were under-socialized through no fault of their own.  In my humble opinion, each side has valid points.  I would hope that while judges would give consideration to these unprecedented times and be patient with puppies, they also would keep breed temperament characteristics in mind and try to differentiate between a shy puppy and one with a bad temperament.  It’s easier said than done, right?

Those exhibitors who are contemplating showing puppies who were born during the pandemic (or just before) and have not had the opportunity to get them out and get them socialized prior to embarking upon a show career should show the same patience working with their exhibits as they are expecting from the judge.  Getting to the show earlier than you otherwise would and walking your puppy around before they show might make the world of difference.  It would seem to me that reducing expectations of your puppy and being patient with them would only be fair.  There is one common denominator that leads to success:  KINDNESS!

The Sun Maid Kennel Club that is scheduled for February 6 and 7, 2021 in Fresno, California has been cancelled due to the City of Fresno Health Department using the site for COVID vaccinations.  All of the volunteers of the Sun Maid Kennel Club did everything possible to hold these shows and they were completely transparent over the past couple of months about the status of these shows.  Full refunds minus MB-F’s cancellation fee will be made to all exhibitors.  A huge thanks to the Sun Maid Kennel Club for all of your efforts to make these shows happen!  We will see you next year in February, 2022!!

The Monticello Kennel Club will hold their shows March 12-14 in Augusta, New Jersey at the fairgrounds. The premium list for this show will be posted at raudogshows.com as soon as it becomes available.

The volunteers involved in the Celebrate Virginia cluster did not give up!!!  These shows, usually held in January, have relocated to Doswell, Virginia and will be held August 25-29, 2021.  Best wishes for a great show, and thanks to all for your hard work.

French Bulldog fanciers at the Brooksville shows this past weekend were frustrated when MB-F, the show’s superintendent, did not have a working scale on the premises.  While a bit late, the situation has been rectified for the remainder of the circuit.

Afghan handler Alicia Morrison Jones had an episode of vertigo at the Corpus Christi shows this past weekend which caused her to visit the hospital.  Tara Richardson picked up where Alicia left off and showed their dog for the remainder of the weekend.  I’m sure Tara did not mind the opportunity to show the dog that she co-owns and bred!  Healing thoughts go out to Alicia who will be back running left-handed circles in no time!

I was relieved to hear that Miniature Pinscher fancier Andrea Kelly is alright after giving fellow exhibitors and friends a bit of a scare when she dropped out of contact for more than 24 hours while traveling from California to the Brooksville, Florida circuit.

The Westminster Kennel Club has released a preliminary list of qualifying dogs for the 2021 Westminster Kennel Club dog show.  The preliminary list includes the top 7 in breed competition for each breed based on the point system they have established that is currently through November, 2020.  The final list will include the top 5 in breed competition through February 15, 2021.  This year’s show will limit entries to 2500 and will be limited to Champions only.

Celebrating birthdays this week are:  Daryl Martin, Adam King and Dick Schaefer.  Enjoy your special day, my friends, and may you have many more!

My thought for this week is this:  When you are truly genuine, there will invariably be people who do not accept you. In that case, you must be your own bada** self, without apology.

Be safe in your travels, my friends.  Best of luck out there!!!!  I look forward to seeing you soon!  Until next time…
