Table Talk · December 27, 2023

Happy Holidays to everyone! I hope you all take time during this short break between show years to rest, recharge, spend time with loved ones and reflect on the past year. During this time many dogs go home to begin the next chapter of their life. Let us not forget to show those dogs love and appreciation for the ride they took you on in 2023.

Either the years are getting shorter, or time is passing by very quickly. It is for this reason I ask you to enjoy the moment as you begin a new year! There are always ups and downs, but as a new year begins, please remember to focus on the positive and learn from those “downs”.  Before we know it, we will be back in Orlando for the AKC National Championship in 2024!

As I was watching group judging at one of the lead-up shows in Orlando, it occurred to me that an entire year was riding on the results of that group to determine #1 and #2 dogs in the herding group. I had butterflies in my stomach for the two competitor teams who worked their butts off for an entire year. The two handlers, Kent Boyles with his German Shepherd Dog, GCH Kaleef’s Mercedes and Jessica Ploudre with her Australian Shepherd, GCHP Northbay Xsell That’s A Wrap were supportive of each other and demonstrated incredible sportsmanship that each and every one of us should take note of and follow in their footsteps. Congratulations to both of you for setting an amazing example. You should be very proud of your accomplishment and your amazing camaraderie throughout the year!

The 2023 AKCNC will be televised on ABC December 31st at 2:00 PM Eastern Time.

Congratulations to Joan Scott on her retirement from handling. Best wishes for your next chapter. We hope to see you center ring in the future.

The Bell County Kennel Club has sent 800 pounds of dog food to the Kileen Texas Shelter and there is more on the way! The Kennel Club intends to send dog food to other area shelters as well. Thank you to all the members and volunteers of the Bell County Kennel Club for your efforts!

Alan Hargrave had quite a health scare a couple of weeks ago and was in the ICU. Great news though, he is home and baking once again!  We look forward to seeing you soon my friend!

Kimberly Meredith is enjoying having her mom Jean home for the holidays after a short hospital stay. Enjoy your special time together!

The premium list for the Progressive Dog Club is up on the Rau website. Entries close January 24th for the shows to be held February 10 & 11 at the Sleepy Hollow Hotel in Tarrytown, New York. Get those beautiful toys entered!

The premium list for the Indy Winter Classic to be held January 31-February 4 (yes, my friends, 5 days of all breed shows and so many specialties!) is available on the Onofrio website! Entries close January 17th so get your dogs entered! Be sure to complete the reserved grooming form available in the premium list.

Clubs looking for venues to hold specialties now have access to a new tool developed by the Delegate Parent Club Committee and the American Kennel Club. To access the specialty site locator, go to https://www.apps.akc.org/apps/sitelocator/index.cfm.

The family of Sandy Mcilwaine has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Humane Society of Huron Valley (hshv.org) or the Block Cancer Foundation (swimacrossamerica.org) in his memory.

Congratulations to Vicki Seiler-Cushman and Dr. Jeff Cushman on the birth of their grandson Titan Erin born December 20th. Congratulations to mom and dad Clay and Megan Fillinger!

Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week include:  Jeff Wright, Carol Spritzer, Jessica DiPerna, Matt Chumbley, Jonathan Herbert, Julie Lindquist, Andrea Glassford, Debbie Davenport, Jason McIlwaine, Melanie Steele and Lisa Arnett.  May you all have a wonderful birthday celebrated with those you love!

I look forward to seeing those of you who are blessed with the opportunity to attend the Palm Springs Dog Show next week in lovely Indio, California!  Please help me share this most fabulous show with those who are not able to make it!  Stop by the Chronicle booth or keep an eye out for me in my roving golf cart office!!

Thank you to Danelle Brown for this week’s thought:

Don’t start your day with broken pieces of yesterday.  Every day is a fresh start.  Every day is a new beginning.  Every morning we wake up is the first day of our new life.

Enjoy the last few days at home, my friends and best of luck as you begin the new year!  Happy New Year!!!!  Until next time…
