Table Talk · August 17, 2022

All AKC Conformation judges recently received a communication from Judging Operations regarding the launch of the judge’s recertification process approved by the AKC Board of Directors. Conformation judges are now required to complete an exam regarding current judging procedures and policies every five years. The exam will be completed through the AKC Canine College and will include a $50 fee.

Fulfillment of the requirement will be spread over several years. The first group of judges asked to complete the exam will primarily include those who have not completed a judging assignment in recent years. Those included in the first group will be receiving an email from judging operations in the near future.

Those interested in reviewing the details of the recertification requirement and the structure of the exam can view the April 19, 2022 webinar here:  https://register.gotowebinar.com/recording/8670873363958390799.

I am encouraged by this requirement. It is my sincere hope that requiring all AKC judges to familiarize themselves with policies and procedures on a regular basis will help maintain the integrity of AKC’s judging system.

I have had several questions from Specialty winners and NOHS winners regarding how the wins are posted on the Canine Chronicle website. Please remember that Specialty wins and NOHS group placements are self-reported. Please send a photograph, name of the show, location, judge, dog’s name, owner’s name(s) and breeder’s name(s) to showresults@caninechronicle.com.

Kelly Shupp’s weekend in Tampa, Florida was brought to an unexpected halt when she fell Saturday night and broke her ankle in several places. She was taken via ambulance to Tampa General Hospital, and thankfully, an outstanding Orthopedic team fixed her up! She is heading to her father’s home in St. Pete and will fly home as soon as she is cleared to do so. Once again fanciers banded together and showed their support by taking care of Kelly’s dog’s and helping her mom, Claire, get on the road to drive the dogs home. Kudos to Milton Lopes, Ash Oldfield, Dennis O’Connor and Lindsay Fetters for rising to the occasion and helping out! Our dog family continues to show love to those in need!!!

Connie Wagner has retired from Nestlé Purina Pet Care after 21 years. Keep your eyes open for Connie in the Dalmatian ring as she returns to showing her dogs with more regularity. Enjoy your retirement, Connie, and good luck in the next chapter of your life!

Robert Scott completed his first body building competition this past weekend in San Diego.  Congratulations on your discipline and determination in preparing for your competition!

It is with great sadness that I pass along the news that Don Jensen has passed away. He and his wife, Georjean, just celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. Don will be sorely missed by all that had the pleasure of crossing paths with him, but especially his wife, Georjean, and Bruce and Tara Schultz.

Congratulations to David Fitzpatrick as he begins another chapter in his career in dogs. David has completed his application to judge the toy group. I am sure that everyone will agree that David will be an amazing addition to the AKC judging roster!

Congratulations to Zack Helmer and June Beckwith on the birth of their baby girl, Maelynn Elizabeth Helmer. I hear she weighed in at 6 pounds 4 ounces and 19 inches long. She was born August 11th, 2022, which is a bit earlier than planned. Enjoy the moment my friends, as time passes much too quickly!

Joe Metheney and Tyler Mills have tied the knot! What a way to celebrate your wedding day by attending the Lady Gaga concert!

Happy Anniversary to Kelly and Edwin Shupp and Luke and Tammy Seidlitz. May you have many more happy, healthy years ahead my friends!

Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week are:  Mareth Kipp, David Salcido, Marina Rose, Andrea McIlwaine, Alicia Morrison Jones, Nicole Munneke, Janice Hayes, Antonia Vidmar, Danielle Frykman, Sam Mammano and Dana Cline. Celebrate with gusto, my friends! You only live once!!

A little something for all fanciers to keep in the back of your minds:  Think positive. Work Hard.  That’s how you get to the winner’s circle!

Be safe out there my friends.  Give those pooches an extra special hug. Win or lose, you take the best dog home! If your travel plans bring you to Santa Barbara, please stop by the Purina Booth, pick up a magazine and say Hi! Until next time…
