National Specialty season is officially upon us! The Whippet National is underway, and I am green with envy as I read all of the posts from my whippet fancier friends who are headed to Topeka, Kansas. I am even more envious of their outstanding entry!!! This year’s entry boasts a whopping 1,114 whippets. Talk about Heaven!!!! Over 1,000 whippets in one place!!! This year conformation will be judged by a long-time whippet fancier and breeder, Ms. Lesley Potts. I have the utmost confidence that my friend Lesley is going to do an outstanding job and have a great time doing it! I have a message for all my friends traveling to the National–be safe and have FUN!!!!!
Debbie Davenport will be a bit lighter this year as she had her port removed from her recent cancer treatment. Debbie showed such courage and determination as she went through this treatment Congratulations Debbie! Enjoy your national specialty!
The Poodle Club of America entries have closed, and they have a significant entry as well! I cannot wait to see my poodle friends at the Purina Event Center and take in the beauty that PCA always provides. This year will be very strange as we will be missing our dear friend Dennis McCoy, who was such an important contributor to the success of the Poodle Club of America and the National Specialty.
John Ramirez and Kenny White made a trip to the emergency room last week because Kenny was retaining fluid on his lungs. Fortunately, Kenny is now home and doing well.
Megan Hof got quite an unpleasant surprise this past weekend in New Caney, TX when she tried to leave the show. All of the gates were locked, and she was locked in; she had to sleep in her van. This happened a couple of years back at the Louisville show due to a miscommunication between the expo center staff, and it was corrected after the first day. While we all want to be sure that we are safe from unwanted visitors, we also want to know that first responders can gain access to the grounds in the event of an emergency. Clubs may want to ensure that they remind their venue(s) on the first day of their cluster that there should always be a way in and out of the show grounds 24 hours a day.
Cheslie and Justin Smithey had a surprise for everyone this past weekend!!! Grayson Smithey made his dog show debut and I understand he was such a good baby! Next stop for baby Grayson is the Whippet National!
Heartfelt sympathies are with Vicki Seiler-Cushman who is mourning the loss of her beautiful mother, Sylvia Jones. I was blessed to have spent a good deal of time with Sylvia in her later years when she attended dogs shows with Vicki. I was always so impressed by how well she kept up with all of our craziness during our busy dog show days! Sylvia will be sorely missed by the fancy, but especially by her devoted daughter. Rest In Peace my dear friend.
The sport of purebred dogs is mourning the loss of yet another young fancier. Healing thoughts to Becky and Jeff Arch on the tragic, untimely loss of their 18-year-old daughter Lauren. Lauren will forever live in our hearts. If you would like to send the Arch Family a card, etc., their address is 3514 Webster Road, Fredonia, NY 14063.
Not only is Janice Hayes an awesome handler and nail goddess, but the girl can DRIVE! Janice’s van had a blowout while she was traveling home from the PBGV National. She was able to maintain control of the Sprinter and get everyone to safety without a scratch! Way to drive, girlfriend!!
The question of the week is this: If an Owner/Handler forgets to check the NOHS box on their entry, can they correct it the day of show? The answer is no. One must opt-in to NOHS prior to closing of the show.
Happy Anniversary to Wayne and Cheryl Cavanaugh who celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary this past week. May the two of you have many more wonderful years of wedded bliss!!
Fanciers celebrating birthdays this week are: Lynn Comstock, Johann Emedi, Robin Stansell, Melinda Lyon, Pam Peat, Ken Wall, Kayla Bruner-Byers, Aaron Wilkerson, Betty Jo Pyle, Howie Huber III, Lynda Birmantas-Beam, John Ramirez, Benjie Marcus, Kevin Mason and Barbara Gossett. Make it a great one, my friends!!
Please remember! You can try and fail, but don’t fail to try!!!!!
Be safe out there, my friends! I will see you soon down the road! Until next time…
