Honoring the Memory of Ron Scott

Many in the sport of purebred dogs are mourning the passing of successful businessman and longtime dog fancier Ron Scott. He was 79.

Ron will be remembered as a passionate supporter of our sport. He would light up the room when he entered it and he always had a joke handy so he could entertain anyone who would listen. Ron never met a stranger.

He was past show chair of Harrisburg Kennel Club and orchestrated its broadcast on national television. He was also a member of numerous kennel clubs including the Kennel Club of Philadelphia and Morris & Essex.

Over nearly four decades, Ron owned numerous top winning dogs beginning with Yorkshire Terriers that he and his first wife, Barbara, bred. Many of their dogs were shown by Gus Gomez and later by Barbara Beissel.

Ron had numerous big winners over the years, most notably the Miniature Poodle, Ch. Surrey Spice Girl, who was piloted by Kaz Hosaka to Best In Show at the 2002 Westminster Kennel Club under the late judge Mr. Everett Dean Jr. “Spice Girl” was the #1 Non-Sporting Dog in 2001.

He also owned and campaigned the Toy Poodle, CH Smash Jp Win A Victory. “Vikki” was the #1 Toy in 2006 and 2007 with Kaz Hosaka at the end of the lead. She also won back-to-back Toy Groups at Westminster in 2007 and 2008.

Ron and Debbie?Burke, who he later married, campaigned CH Smash Jp Moon Walk who was also handled by Kaz–to #1 Toy in 2009. “Walker” went on to win the Toy Group at Westminster in 2010.

Ron and Debbie had another big winner with the Old English Sheepdog, GCH Bugaboo’s Picture Perfect. Handled by breeder-owner Colton Johnson, “Swagger” was the #1 Herding Dog in 2013 and 2014, and #2 Among All Breeds in 2014. He was chosen Reserve Best In Show at the 2013 Westminster Kennel Club as a class dog. He is the only dog to win this recognition since 1925. Swagger won the Herding Group again at the 2015 Westminster Kennel Club.

All of us at The Canine Chronicle express our sincere condolences to Ron’s wife, Debbie, and the rest of his family. He will be missed by all that knew him. Without him, the world is a sadder place.
