There is a reason why the folks at the Disney Studios named the tall, anthropomorphic dog-like character “Goofy.” While often portrayed as dimwitted and clumsy, Goofy is intuitive and clever every now and then, albeit in his own unique and some- times eccentric way. He was created as, among other things, an everlasting optimist and a good Samaritan. Add to that description, a distinct sense of humor and you are pretty much talking about real-life dogs. Or, at least a lot of them that I’ve either known or have heard owners recount tales of have matched this description.

Dogs have been known to do strange and unexpected things that leave their owners and everyone else who watched them shaking their heads in disbelief at what they had just seen. In many cases, laughter followed the head-shaking phase. Take, for example, the actions of Dyna, a Belgian Laekenois, when confronted by a flock of agitated sheep. After a day of being harassed and chased by be- ginning herding dogs of all shapes and sizes, the sheep were totally unglued. When a dog came into the field, they would put as much distance as possible between them and the dog. When Dyna came into the field, whenever she would take a step or two in the direction of the sheep, they would bolt. This had all the makings of a total disaster as the stock was completely rowdy. But then, on her own, the dog came up with a solution. Her idea was to turn around and back up toward the sheep.
