In these dark and quite frightening times, what we need to hear, more than ever before, are stories of resilience, perseverance and eventual triumph. It is of no surprise that the popular fairy tales, which we were all brought up on, were often also written in times of great fear, challenge and hardship.
And most fairy tales have a couple of common themes running through them; the first is of overcoming fear and assuring that, in the end, everything will be happy ever after, and the other usually involves some kind of ‘rags to riches’ story.
Recently, here in the UK, we had our own little canine fairy tale, a true success story that has sadly been overshadowed by the dreadful COVID-19 virus that is currently sweeping the globe.
Crufts was held back in the beginning of March (which seems like a lifetime ago now, doesn’t it?) and, after four momentous days, it was won by Maisie (Ch. Silvae Trademark), a Wirehaired Dachshund – who became even more famous by taking a ‘toilet break’ on her victory lap! In the packed arena, Maisie’s win was cheered on by the crowds and by millions of dog lovers all around the world.
Maisie’s delighted owner beamed as she said, “I have to say, wow, it’s not very believable at this moment. It’s something you dream of and you don’t ever think will happen.”
She was quite right; it was the first time a Dachshund had ever taken the top spot in the show’s 129 year history and, out of the breed’s six varieties, I don’t think many Dachshund aficionados would have been brave enough to have put money on the Standard Wirehaired actually being the first to get that coveted position!
It simply doesn’t possess the svelte sophistication of the Smooth or the eye-catching glamour of the Long and so it has always tended to somewhat fade away in any line up.
But what the Wire does possess, in spades, is a wonderful personality and a devilish sense of humor. I had a wire bitch and she was the sweetest girl – friendly with everyone and always completely trustworthy with children.
So, let’s take a look at the fascinating history of this Cinderella of the Dachshund world.
