The HSUS is Now “Humane World for Animals”

By Caroline Cole

If the Humane World for Animals sounds like a legit organization worthy of your donations, ask yourself if you want to donate to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Because as of Valentine’s Day 2025, the HSUS officially changed its name to the Humane World for Animals (www.humaneworld.org). It also has a brand-new logo. What it doesn’t have is brand new leadership, or a brand-new agenda.

The new name probably arose from former HCUS leader Wayne Pacelle when he titled his blog “A Humane Nation.” The newer version expands their reach (and presumably, donation base) to the entire world, at the same time removing any anti-Americanism that could discourage foreign donations.

HSUS says the reason for the change is that “humane society” doesn’t translate well, and that it is often confused with local shelters sometimes known as “humane societies.” This complaint has more often come from the local shelters as they contend (rightly) that donations meant for animal sheltering are often sent to the HSUS—which is actually a lobbying organization. Dog breeders will recognize it as an organization very often working against dog breeders and even dog ownership.

The HSUS states that the AKC opposes some 450 bills endorsed by the HSUS. These include a New York bill to prohibit debarking of dogs, a Virginia bill requiring continual access to water, one allowing Oklahoma’s Department of Agriculture to seize dogs from commercial breeders for suspicion of welfare violations, and a Georgia law prohibiting ownership of objects that could be related to dog fighting. In many cases what seems on the surface to be a legitimate attempt to better animal welfare is often overreaching and sometimes to the detriment of dogs and especially hobby dog breeders.

Whenever donating to a charity, especially an animal-centered one, do your research and know their goals, how they spend their money, and in this case—who they really are.
