Table Talk – December 26, 2018
I hope everyone had a great Christmas Holiday and is enjoying some downtime with loved ones–both human and canine. I know I cherish every opportunity for a little relaxation and the holidays are the perfect time to travel, catch up on books and movies, and do other things I can’t make time for during the year. Here are a few examples of how our friends spent some of their much deserved time off: Lois DeMers, Marina Rose and Dina Planche went immediately to Disney without passing “GO”; Dylan and Chris Keith and Megan Hof were off to Key West; Diana Wilson went to Aruba; and Tammy and Greg Bohlke didn’t even wait for Orlando to end before they sailed away on a 10 day cruise.
I thank all of you for your kind words about our Orlando Table Talk Live! coverage and would like to extend an extra thumbs up to those of you who took time out of your busy schedules to chat with us. I look forward to bringing you more fun-filled coverage from New York. We are always looking for segment ideas so if you have a thought for a segment you think would be of interest to the fancy, please email me at deb.cooper@caninechronicle.com
There were a few concerns raised by exhibitors in Orlando regarding elderly judges who were having difficulty performing their duties in the ring. This is such a difficult, delicate subject. One would hope that we all recognize the signs of when it is time to stop judging (or handling, for that matter). Sadly, that is not always the case and I believe AKC owes it to these judges (and to the exhibitors who enter to them) to play close attention and counsel them on their limitations as they get older. If individuals have concerns brought about by the specific behavior of a judge in the ring, please bring it to the attention of Judging Operations.
The Juniors Clothing Sale and Exchange and Raffle in Orlando raised over $17,000! Congratulations to Arvind DeBraganca and his volunteers for putting this very worthy, fund-raising effort together. I understand the proceeds will be split evenly among the Onofrio JAC, the Diane Albers Scholarship Fund, and the Southern Handlers Charity League.
The 2018 AKC National Championship sponsored by Royal Canin will air on Animal Planet at 6 pm EST on New Year’s Day. The winner of the #RoyalCaninContest will be announced at that time! Open a bottle of wine, snuggle up on the couch with your pooch and watch!
Airlines continue to change their policies regarding the accommodations for Service and Emotional Support dogs and the shipping of dogs in the cargo hold. The fluidity of the airline’s policies have raised concerns for some breeders and exhibitors. Perhaps the AKC could organize a task force to address these issues. I continue to appeal to all of traveling exhibitors to please not abuse the Service Dog provision. It is going to hurt all of us in the long run.
Jason Hoke has alerted all AKC Judges licensed to judge Great Danes that the Great Dane Club of America has sent them a guide for judging the Merle Great Dane. The Merle is a recent color update to the Great Dane Club breed standard.
We wish a happy 26th Anniversary to Rob and Erin Hall! Mickey Feigelson and Chuck Leachman are celebrating 14 years together. Happy Anniversary you lovebirds! May you have many more years of wedded bliss, happiness and health!
I was saddened to hear that Boxer Breeder and fancier Hanna Renno of Renno Boxers perished in a fire, along with all of her dogs. Our most sincere thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this most difficult time.
Nanci Coffin also passed away suddenly while her husband was out of town. Nanci’s Facebook business, My Closet – Suits for Less, has been shut down.
Celebrating birthdays this week are: Andy Linton, Linda Williams, Carol Spritzer, Bobby Schoenfeld, Bill Shelton, Lisa Arnett, Jessica DiPerna, Cindy Stroupe, Melanie Steele, Andrea Glassford and Jason McIlwaine.
Enjoy the last bit of quiet time, my friends, and let me know what fun adventures you have in store! Hug your pooches! Until next time…
