The fancy lost two strong women last year: Iris Love and Sue Jeffries. They inhabited different spheres, but both contributed hugely to the fancy and its extended communities. They are remembered as inspiring mentors and teachers, and as generous and beloved friends. In this second of two articles, we celebrate a sustaining presence in dog writing, showing and mentoring–Sue Jeffries.
Sue was the dog fancy’s Swiss Army knife: a breeder and owner/handler most recently of Silky Terriers; a long-time canine correspondent for the Louisville Courier Journal; a mentor and educator; and active member of several breed clubs, and the Dog Writers Association of America.
The first thing everyone remembers about her is “her beautiful smile,” says Lexie Bewley, a Louisville, Kentucky native and protégé of Jeffries.
“She was like a smiling carousel, she made the room just blossom,” declares Ranny Green, retired pet columnist for the Seattle Times, and long-time friend and colleague of Jeffries. She also had an inimitable Southern drawl (she was born in the historic Portland district of Louisville) and her usual greeting (to female friends) was, “Hey girl.”
The second thing people remember was her indefatigable generosity.
Green first got to know Jeffries in the late 1990s, during his tenure as the president of the Dog Writers Association of America.
“She was very strongly involved with that and she ran the writing contest every year, which meant she handled probably 500 to 600 entries a year.”
