Remembering Dr. Alexander Duane Butherus

May 15, 1939 – September 11, 2026

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Alexander Duane Butherus, who died on September 11, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 87.

Duane was an extraordinary man—a respected scientist, devoted husband, treasured friend, and true icon of the purebred dog community. He possessed a remarkable intellect, a wonderful sense of humor, and a quiet ability to bring wisdom, balance, and reason to those around him.

At the heart of Duane’s life was his beloved wife, Connie. Together for 68 years and happily married for 66, their enduring partnership was one of extraordinary love and devotion.

A chemist by profession, Duane spent 31 years as a scientist at Bell Laboratories. His scientific expertise later became invaluable to one of his greatest passions: advancing the health and well-being of dogs. He devoted decades of service to the AKC Canine Health Foundation, serving in numerous leadership roles, including Chairman of the Board and Chairman of the Scientific Review Committee. His commitment to rigorous scientific research helped advance canine health and leaves a lasting legacy.

Duane and Connie were also deeply devoted to Afghan Hounds, breeding and exhibiting the breed for decades. Duane was an accomplished AKC judge, longtime member and past President of the Afghan Hound Club of America, and a respected leader throughout the sport of purebred dogs. Duane was also an active member of the Philadelphia Kennel Club and the Morris & Essex Kennel Club.

A gentleman, a scientist, a mentor, and a champion for dogs, Duane lived an extraordinary life of purpose and service. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten. His influence will continue through the people he touched, the dogs he loved, and the important work in canine health that he helped champion.
