Goldilocks may have thought the wolf had a big brain, but alas, not so much the dog. And what about anatomy? When I was in grad school in Neuroscience I recall one of my professors–who was world renowned in the field of comparative brain anatomy–giving an exaggerated shudder the first time he saw my Borzoi…”Arggh!” he exclaimed. “That dog just has a neural tube! How does she function?” That became the running joke every time he’d see one of my dogs, although he was kinder to the Salukis. I had this uneasy feeling he wanted to do some tests and cut open my Borzoi’s brain…

Fortunately with today’s far less invasive technologies we can begin to unravel breed differences in brain anatomy without cutting out anybody’s brain. Two recent studies have already shed light on possible breed differences in brain size and anatomy.
