Looking Around With Lee – Our National Pastime

120 – June 2019

By Lee Canalizo

It started with a simple phone call from my son who seemed a bit distracted during our usual chat…He tells me he’s busy watching the Irish Setter National on AKC.TV. It was being streamed live from Charlotte, NC. “Okay, give me a call when you’re done,” I said. No call came, so I called back later that day, and now he tells me he’s watching the Cardigan Welsh Corgi National from St. Louis which was also being streamed live on the internet platform for AKC-TV. We had another quick chat with the same “call me when you’re done” conclusion.

You can imagine there was no surprise when I tried to call him the next day as I know all too well that most Nationals are multi-day events…and sure enough he was not just watching a National…HE WAS WATCHING THREE NATIONALS! It seems the Irish Setters, Cardigans and German Shorthaired Pointers all had their breed judging happening at the same time. The GSPs had someone on Facebook streaming the action! Mike tells me he’s at his office desk with one on his desktop computer, one on his laptop computer, and the third one going on his Ipad. I have to assume Mike has a really large desk, but who does that sort of thing? Don’t answer that yet. I’m going to bet Mike was not the only one multi-tasking.

I did some checking on the AKC website and they have a list of dates for each breeds National event. A staggering thing jumped out at me while viewing this list. From April to June there are Eighty (80) nationals held throughout the country…and sixty-three (63) held from September to October. A few might be outside that window, but not many. One has to assume that these events have to be held when seasonal weather can allow for travel…especially air travel which is so closely regulated by temperature. I know one of my breed clubs has a policy for all Nationals to be held only in the months from September to November.
