Looking Around With Lee

One surely knows when Fall has arrived here in the USA, especially when it’s a year that holds a Presi- dential election. Thank God I have my dog sport and their season of “nationals” to distract me from all the non-stop (mostly) irritating and nonsensical barrage of ag- gressive, belligerent, loudmouthed, (you get the picture) ob- fuscation from every direction.
Transport me to some of my favorite dog shows with some cool, crisp air, and bright changing autumn colors… please! I miss the Westchester weekend that starts a string of beautiful events in the Northeast corridor of the country. I know many of the events have shifted along with the fall breezes, and maybe we too are going through some sort of “climate change” as well in our unique little environment.

But one thing that never changes is that every fall, like clockwork, there are a plethora of National Specialties in so many breeds. Many of the large breeds have to host their Nationals in the fall due to factors related to safe travel tem- peratures, and grounds with good outdoor spaces for showing and grooming. One could spend two months at non-stop Nationals…breed after breed in succession. Sadly, due to a recent unexpected kitchen replacement (thank you one faulty ice-maker disconnect) which flooded a four room span, I was home picking carpets, cabinet, granite, tile and paint for the necessary remodeling. My kids are rubbing their hands behind my back knowing how big a boost this will give them when the time comes for resale value, Yeah, like I don’t know that guys!

Luckily I attended the Afghan Hound World Congress in the Spring and got to see many of the same friends and dogs, so I wasn’t completely removed for the year. From all accounts our National this year went well. The weather Gods calmed down after a bit of moisture on the sweep- stakes day, and three full days of sunshine followed. The fancy was provided full updates and news well in advance at every point along the way leading up to the event. The show chairs worked their butts off and the results afforded everyone a beautiful expanse of lawn, huge tents, seating and afterhour social activities. According to hearsay, some people were possibly a wee bit too social LOL. I did miss the full video coverage our parent club usually offers, but I understand that the professional videographers don’t shoot outdoor events as a rule. That didn’t mean I went without finding many snippets, and whatever Facebook live is, I am it’s new best friend. Do I lament the long evenings with friends huddled around a Kodak Super 8 projector whirling aloud and scurrying to find a replace- ment bulb because we wore the damn thing out watching endless rolls of footage? You bet I do!
