10 – February, 2025

By Tom Grabe

As we were wrapping up the February issue of The Canine Chronicle and readying it for print, my thoughts turned to preparation for Westminster and our trek to New York City for the show. This year marks the 38th year Amy and I have been going to this iconic show and we look forward to its return to midtown Manhattan after a 4-year, Covid-induced hiatus from the city. We’ll all have fond memories of the shows held at Lyndhurst and Queens. The shows were special in their own way but, in my opinion, they didn’t have the energy that produced the memorable moments from the events held in the city.

I have so many memories from the shows held at the Garden before the daytime judging moved to the Piers. There were shows at the Piers in the ‘80s and ‘90s. There were numerous specialties held there the weekend before Westminster. There was no power there and we were not allowed to use a dryer even if there had been power. We would groom our dogs at the Garden or our hotel room then put some final touches on them when we got to the pier. It was definitely old school.

Back then you stacked your crates two and three high in the handler’s benching that was elbow to elbow. You had to give yourself time to get from the benching area to the rings due to the overflow crowds and the ready rings barely had room for the handlers and dogs that shared the space with the press photographers.

I remember some amazing performances by the Best In Show winners from those days. Hatter, Indy, Prince, Robert, JR, Josh and Mick come to mind. I remember watching Stump’s big win at 10 years old. I recall some of the iconic judges who awarded those dogs. Most of them aren’t with us anymore.
