From The CC Vault: A New Year’s Resolution for Breeders

Making New Year’s resolutions is traditional for many. They can involve work, family life, finances and personal health. If you are one of those overachievers who make resolutions for each area of your life, it is easy to become overwhelmed. So here is a fairly easy one related to our canine companions. Read a good book! While limited, the list below includes a new release, some classics and a few that range further afield.
If you only read one book this year, it needs to be Master Class – The Tartanside Story by John Buddie. This book is a magnificent blend of autobiography, story-telling and workbook. Many years ago, I jumped at the chance to attend a seminar presented by John. It was moving and transformative. Particularly memorable was the time he spent talking about facing PRA in his beloved Collies. When I got to that part of the book, it moved me to tears again. There is deep kindness and caring when an icon shares their darkest moments and deepest vulnerabilities balanced with the successes that raised them to rock star status.
Older, but ageless books of the same ilk include Born to Win Breed to Succeed by Patricia Craige Trotter and Reaching for the Stars (originally published as Advanced Labrador Retriever Breeding) by Mary Roslin Williams. Both books were written by highly accomplished dog breeders who set about to share the tools and stories of their success. Both books are still widely available. Also falling into this “classic” category, Annie on Dogs, a collection of articles written by Anne Rogers Clark is on sale at Dogwise.com!
