The Greyhound ranked 132nd in 2021 AKC registration statistics and is on the AKC’s current low-entry breeds list. It is one of the oldest breeds, among the first recognized by AKC in 1885, and is the prototype sighthound. Many other breeds define themselves in terms of the Greyhound–how they are the same and how they are different.

Twenty-three Greyhound breeder-judges were invited to take a survey about evaluating conformation in their breed. Eighteen agreed to contribute. Fourteen returned the completed information, and one did part of a survey (outlines only). The group averaged over thirty-three years in the breed and over seventeen years judging it. Forty percent have judged their national specialty, and two-thirds have judged other Greyhound specialties.

Greyhound Virtues

The breeder-judges were asked to prioritize a list of characteristics from the standard, from most important (1) to least important (16). Below is the list of virtues in sequence by the averages of their survey rankings.
