A Tribute To Dog Show Moms

Dog show moms are truly the unsung heroines of our sport. They are the greatest moms and the sport of purebred dogs just would not be the same without them. Marlene Groves, a colleague of mine, asked, “What about grandmas?” “Grand-mothers, count too,” I told her. Cara Greger reminded me, “not to forget the crazy aunts.” And, Kat Wallis, a professional handler suggested that handlers who mentor juniors become a “junior mom” at some point, too…and she gets no argument from me.
With Mother’s Day just passed, it seems only right that we take the time to say “thank you” and give dog show moms the recognition they deserve. Being the mother of a junior handler and dog show fanatic is not always easy. Children feed off parental positivity, so, it is important that moms keep motivated in order to motivate their son or daughter. Mothers naturally want to do everything they can to support their children and help them succeed; so, what do they do to help ensure that they are providing their juniors with all they need to excel?
Almost everyone has his or her own ideas about what constitutes best practices in this area. It can be a complex matter because what works best for one young person does not always work equally as well for another. However, I am told by juniors that there are at least eight things that their highly successful dog show moms do to support them and make sure they have fun along the way.
