From The CC Vault: Social Media – The Best and Worst of our Worlds

F-hamilton-social_bkg-300x225

Nothing has captured the attention of the dog show world quite as effectively as social media…

It is an invaluable tool for keeping in touch with fellow breeders and owners/handlers who have our dogs. The quick and easy exchange of information on ring timing, assistance, emergency coverage and engaging immediate help for a dog or person who goes down, is invaluable. Many a life has been saved due to the quick actions taken via a post or directions obtained off Google+!
Social media also supports, for better or worse, the dissemination of misinformation. Difficult and unkind discussions, intentional or unintentional, are often publicly broadcast via chat rooms, breed groups, judges lists, and a myriad of other social media dog sites. These sites can carry this misinformation globally in a matter of seconds. Several dog show exhibitors have been victims of general social media gossip or worse.

From The CC Vault: A Certain Comfort Zone

GMJ_AUGtitle_2012

In show after show it is oftentimes rather obvious that there are judges, particularly some of the newer ones, out there who are operating well outside their comfort zone and, as a result, are not always performing in what one might choose to call a fully satisfactory and highly meritorious fashion. This despite the considerable bureaucratic rigor, which has been applied to the approval process during the course of these past two decades. When an individual is clearly thinking too much, and evidently allowing the mind process to reach a condition resembling a pretzel, clean and incisive decision-making becomes impossibility.

From The CC Vault: We Do Need Professional Handlers!

bsmith_ANNUAL_2012

Although the title of this article might imply that there could be a move to do away with Professional Handlers; that is not the intent AT ALL! Professional Handlers are essential to the survival of our sport! They are needed just as much as Amateur Owner Handlers, breeders, and exhibitors with limited breeds in their string.

Professional handlers bring a large string of dogs with them and with that string a large amount of entry fees. If there were 50 professional handlers with 20 dogs per string with entry fees at $30 per dog the entries could average about $30,000. Some professional handlers carry more dogs in their string, some less. So many of the smaller shows that rely on Amateur Owner Handlers or local/regional entries often depend on smaller numbers of entries and consequently their profit margin is VERY small. Professional handlers bring many entries with accompanying dollars for the local economy. For that, local clubs should be grateful.
